ORONO - Marjory Shaw Chase, 88, died after a short illness on September 7, 2016 at the Orono Commons health care facility. She was born March 4, 1928 in Three Rivers, Quebec, the daughter of Earle Eaton Shaw and Rose Mae Wilbur.
Marjory grew up in small towns and cities throughout the province of Quebec, where her father worked as a forester for the International Paper Company. She had fond memories of her childhood in Quebec, as well as of summer vacations spent on the Wilbur family farm in Pembroke, Maine. After graduating from McGill University with a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics in 1949, Marjory went to work for the Extension Service in Northampton, Massachusetts. She married her husband Bob on September 29, 1951 in Valois, Quebec. They lived for several years in Cape Elizabeth and then moved to Hampden, where they lived happily for more than 50 years before moving to the Dirigo Pines community in Orono in 2006. Home, family, and friends were Marjory’s chosen career, life, and joy – and she considered those choices to have been perfect ones for her. She also loved (in no particular order) Maine, birds, animals, flowers, music, books, art – and life!
Marjory is predeceased by her parents and a sister, Joanne and survived by a sister, Rosemary Hughes of Livonia, Michigan. She is also survived by her husband, Robert Miller Chase of Orono; her three sons, Daniel Shaw Chase of Cape Elizabeth and his wife Pat, John Earle Chase of Beaufort, South Carolina and his wife Michele, David Robert Chase of Walpole, New Hampshire and his wife Amy; four grandchildren, Michael and his wife Jennifer; Andrew and his wife Rebecca; Allison, and Nolan; two great-grandsons, William and Connor; and many nieces, nephews, and their children.
On Saturday, October 1st at 2:00 p.m., Marjory’s family will host a “come as you are” (very informal) remembrance celebration in the Gathering Place on the 2nd floor at Dirigo Pines Inn in Orono. We hope you will come to hear music of Marjory’s choosing and to share your own memories of this wonderful lady. Those who wish to remember Marjory in a special way may make donations in her memory to the Edythe L. Dyer Community Library, 269 Main Road North, Hampden, Maine 04444.
