Martha Benson

June 13, 1926 — February 25, 2016

BANGOR %u2013 M. Marteile %u201CTeile%u201D Benson, wife of the Venerable Thomas E. Benson, Archdeacon, passed away from earthly life into life everlasting with our heavenly Father on February 25, 2016. Teile was born June 13, 1926 in Worcester, Massachusetts, daughter of Harold and Hazel (Woodcock) Butler. Teile grew up in Worcester and after high school graduation went on to Simmons College graduating from New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She met her future husband while in nursing school. Teile and Tom were married at Saint Michael%u2019s Episcopal Church, in Worcester on June 5, 1948.
After moving to Bangor in 1955 Teile worked at Eastern Maine General Hospital now Eastern Maine Medical Center for 32 years, retiring in 1988. She received the distinguished service award from EMMC in 1989 for her outstanding work during her years at EMMC. Teile was a firm believer in public service and volunteered for many organizations throughout her lifetime. Her community service began in Bangor in the late fifties as a member of Jaycee Wives and Symphony Women. She supported the community and the work of the hospital through United Way and the Hospital Development Foundation. She and Tom were instrumental, along with other remarkable people, in establishing the first Hospice program in Bangor in 1981 called C.O.P.E.S. A Community of People Extending Support. In 1984 the program became affiliated with EMMC and is now Hospice of Eastern Maine. After retiring from EMMC, Teile worked part-time in Hospice nursing, and gave flu vaccines during the fall for many years working for Bangor Area Visiting Nurses at Miller Drug. Teile was an active member of Saint John%u2019s Episcopal Church for over fifty years serving on many committees; usher, greeter, and member of the alter guild. She and her daughter Ann started a prayer shawl ministry for the church in 2008. This ministry is now a permanent part of the church outreach program. In Teile%u2019s sixty odd years of nursing she was a teacher and mentor to many which made her chosen profession even more rewarding to her. Teile had a warm, caring way with patients, their families and staff. Teile truly loved being a nurse. After retirement Teile and Tom went on an eight week cross country trip. Visiting different parts of our country was very special to both of them. Teile loved her family time and looked forward to family trips that seemed to take place during their many Anniversaries. Teile also enjoyed reading and continued her travels through the written word after she was no longer able to travel long distances. Teile enjoyed a good hand of cribbage or game of scrabble with Tom and special friends. It gave Teile so much joy with every visit. Teile was an avid gardener and spent many hours working in her rock gardens to keep them beautiful. This was very therapeutic for her. Teile is survived by her beloved husband, Thomas; her daughter, Ann Benson and her wife, Meredith Allbright of Bangor; her daughter-in-law, Debbi Van Arsdale and her husband, Steve of Delaware, Ohio. Teile was predeceased by her parents, brother Hervey Butler and son Gregory Benson.
Our family would like to thank all of our friends and family for their love and support along with Dr Claudia Picone, Dr Vrinda Sardana, Dr Ganesha Santhyadka, and Cynthia Milles, FNP, PhD.
