Mary Benton

September 26, 1928 — September 18, 2021

HAMPDEN- Mary “Meg” Gardiner Benton, 94, passed away peacefully September 18, 2021 at a healthcare facility in Dover-Foxcroft, having celebrated a long life enriched by the love, the gratitude and faith of her mother, Alethea Gardiner.

Meg dearly loved her family and is survived by a son, Eric and his wife, Rainelda; her twin daughters, Jayne Lee Reeves and her husband, Scott, of Dexter, and Jo Ellen Wilkins of Williamsville, NY, seven grandchildren, Rachel, joseph, Ian Kaitlin, Keneisha, Amber, Timothy, as well as very dear great-granddaughters, Shirley and Joey Lee and a great-grandson, Dakota. Meg also leaves behind a brother, Bob Gardiner of Lenox, MA; nephew, Philip Gardiner; and a cousin Jane Smith of Lincoln, MA.

Many valued friends and activates filled Meg’s life with joy. She truly was delighted to meet anyone new and was quick to make a friend. Some of her passions included her church, traveling, lots of music, and the family camp on Eggemoggin Reach. Meg also loved sailing along the coast of Maine and down the Intercoastal Waterway to Florida along with the warm sun and sand if Siesta Key, FL all the time struggling to learn Spanish.

For most of her adult life Meg did her best to find ways to help children. She helped with all the scout groups, taught church school, as well as church youth choir. When she heard about dyslexia and other learning disabilities, she went back to school to learn more. She began and never stopped doing the thing she treasured most, tutoring young students who needed new ways to learn. Meg loved to tell the story of a second-grade boy who did not know what a penny was, but by the end he insisted on counting change for everyone in the family! What a joy! Meg has a strong and happy spirit and always felt “It’s a Wonderful World” a la Louis Armstrong.

Those who wish to remember Meg in a special way may make gifts in her memory to All Souls Congregational Church Sunday School Program or the Church Choir, 10 Broadway, Bangor, Maine 04401 or to the charity of your choice. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com
