Mary Boyd

August 1, 1936 — January 6, 2022

Mary S. Boyd, 85, died on Thursday, January 6, 2022, with family by her side, after a short illness. Mary was born August 1, 1936, in Jamestown, New York. The daughter of Argus and Alice (Ingleson) Sheridan. Mary was the widow of Mark P. Boyd, who died March 19, 2008.

Mary graduated from Jamestown High School in 1954. She met her future husband, a classmate, while attending Jamestown High. Following their courtship and Mark’s graduation from Niagara University, they were married in 1958. Together they left the hills of western New York and began their life journey by moving to Washington D.C. where Mark attended Georgetown University School of Dentistry, and Mary worked as a secretary in an Arlington, Virginia bank. Mary enjoyed working in the loan offices and meeting new people. Following Mark’s graduation from Georgetown University in 1962 with a D.D.S degree, Mark and Mary then went on active duty with the United States Air Force with a permanent assignment to Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine. While at Loring, Mary and Mark both fell in love with Maine and decided to make this their home. In the fall of 1964, after Mark’s active-duty obligation with the Air Force ended, he, Mary, and their eldest son, Pat, moved to 62 Main Street in Orono, Maine. They had a home with an attached dental office for Mark at that location until 1971 when they moved to 118 Forest Avenue in Orono, again with an attached office for Mark, and where they raised their three sons. The office was later moved to 15 Forest Avenue, where it remained until closing in 2002. Mary assisted Mark in the offices as business manager over the years.

Mark and Mary were active in many professional, civic, and business activities, the nearest and dearest to them being the Orono-Old Town Kiwanis Club. Mark founded the Orono Dental Clinic and co-founded the Orono Health Association, where Mary volunteered and assisted in helping it grow into a strong, local community support organization.
Mary was light of heart and always liked a good joke. In her personal life, she enjoyed spending time with her family and with friends on adventures. Whether canoeing, kayaking, summers at the lake, skiing, sailing Penobscot Bay, or a road trip through the United States or Canada, Mary always appreciated some exploration. Mary was the self-proclaimed “dog lady” and mostly enjoyed the company of a long list of Labradors. She also liked her daily walks, reading, her dollhouses, antiquing, and quilting, having made and shared many of her creations with her family. Mary was always supportive of family outings and her sons’ pursuits. They are forever grateful for her encouragement as those cherished memories are part of her legacy with Mark. It is her spirit, independence, love of life and her family that will be remembered by all who knew her.

Mary is survived by her three sons, and their wives and their families: Patrick S. of Washburn, Maine, his wife, Susan, and their children, Tyler and Elizabeth Mary; Michael W. of Dedham, Maine, his wife, Kellie, and their children, Amanda, Alyssa, and Nicholas; and Matthew S. of Custer, Washington, his wife, Christina, and their children, Finnegan and Ellary. Mary is also survived by her brother, Edward (Ted) Sheridan and his wife, Silvia, of Buffalo, New York.
