Mary E. Harrison of Bangor passed away on Sunday, November 22 at age 39.
She is survived by her husband, Josh, children Titania and Malcolm, close family friend Pierre Summerton, mother Dianne Sickles and brother Sean Sickles, along with multiple cousins and in-laws.
Mary was born in Bangor, Maine and raised across the river in Brewer. She graduated from Brewer High School and later got her Bachelor’s degree in Biology Education from Husson University, originally planning to become a middle- and high-school level science teacher. That career path never materialized, and so she worked in various retail stores, most recently the Gamestop in Bangor. In early 2020 she began working for Eastern Maine Medical Center in the preregistration department along with her husband.
One of Mary’s biggest passions was gaming. Her father was an avid wargamer and introduced her to the hobby at a young age. Whether board games, tabletop roleplaying games, or video games, Mary enjoyed sharing time around a table (or on the couch) with family and friends. It was through this hobby that Mary met her husband, Josh, and they married in 2001.
Mary’s gaming led to semi-professional work in the tabletop game industry as a play-tester, editor, writer, and developer with FASA Games, contributing primarily to the Demonworld and Earthdawn game lines.
After marrying, Mary moved to Bangor with Josh. Their home was frequently open to family and friends who needed a place to stay, whether for a few weeks, months, or even years. Even when the house became more crowded with the arrival of Titania in 2007 and Malcolm in 2010, efforts were made to make sure there was room.
Mary struggled with health issues most of her adult life, including chronic pain. Most of these issues relate to Lupus, a condition that wasn’t diagnosed until her mid-30s. The frequent medical appointments and chronic conditions led her to connect and empathize with other people in similar situations.
The one word that best describes Mary is tenacious. She was a fierce advocate for her children, loyal to her friends, and empathetic to others. She touched lives locally and around the world. Her generous heart and sense of humor will be sorely missed by countless friends, forged family, and coworkers.
