Mary Flanigan Ismail

Mary Louise Patricia Flanigan Ismail, 85, passed away at Northern Lights EMMC on November 20, 2022. Mary was born April 19, 1937 to Francis and Alice (Carey) Flanigan in Waterbury, Connecticut. Mary was the youngest of six children.
Mary was a graduate of Smith College in Northampton, MA. She was a dedicated educator who poured her creativity, love, and passion for learning and teaching into everything she did. The Ismails were residents of Orono, Maine for over 30 years, where Mary was an active member of the community. A constant presence in the halls and on the sports fields at Asa Adams Elementary School and Orono High School, cheering on and supporting her children and their friends. When her children were grown, Mary joined the staff of All Saint’s Catholic School, where she taught until her retirement at 80. Mary was very proud of her children and grand children’s accomplishments and experienced great joy watching her many students blossom over the years.
Mary was predeceased by her parents and her siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Sue Short and her husband, Jim of Shrewsbury, PA; her son, Steven Ismail, his wife, Brooke and their daughters, Lauren and Lexi, of Glenburn, ME and her son, Scott Ismail, his wife, Kirsten and their daughter, Samantha, of Hampden, ME. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as her “bonus” daughter, Nancy O’Connor.
Per Mary’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at 9:30 am at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St John’s Catholic Church at 217 York St, Bangor. For those who are unable to attend in person, the mass may be watched via livestream at www.stpaulbangor.me/watch-mass-live. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the Parish Hall immediately following the Mass.

The family would like to thank the staff at EMMC and Bangor Nursing for the care and compassion they gave to Mary and family during her illness.
