Mary-Jane (Bates) Freese, 87, wife for 64 years, of John D. Freese, died February 28, 2014 after a long illness with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born December 29, 1926 in Hartford , CT., daughter of Ormond and Margaret (Schroeder) Bates.
She was a graduate of New Britain High School and Edgewood Park Junior College.
Mary-Jane was employed with Penobscot Valley Regional Planning Commission and Eastern Maine Development Corporation. She was a member for over 50 years of the Penobscot Valley Country Club, where she enjoyed golfing. She also enjoyed tennis, skiing, knitting and playing the piano. Mary-Jane was a member of the Junior League of Bangor and a member and past president of the Quipus Club. Mary-Jane could always be found at her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, and she enjoyed supporting the University of Maine teams.
Surviving in addition to her husband, are four children, Martha Shattuck and her husband, Tom of Waterville, Betsy Mackie and her husband, John of Orrington, Andrew Freese and his wife, Rosemary of Veazie, Amy Estabrook and her husband Tim of Orono; grandchildren, Jennifer Freese and her husband, Rafal Subernat of Hermon, Jillian Chandler and her husband, Case of Veazie, Jeffrey Shattuck and his wife, Sarah of Boston, Beth Shattuck of Washington, Julie Hovencamp and her husband David of Milford, Michelle Goody and her husband Brad of Orono, Laura Tardiff and her husband Michael of MI, great grandchildren, Lily and Wyatt Chandler, Sierra Goody, and Max and Maya Subernat.
Relatives and friends are invited to call 6-8 P.M. Tuesday March 4, 2014 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St. Bangor, where funeral services will be held 2 P.M. Wednesday March 5, 2014 with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher of All Souls Congregational Church, officiating. Spring interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor following the service Wednesday.
