Mary (Geikie) Rand

Mary Louise Rand, 80, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2016 at Sedgewood Commons in Falmouth, ME.
Mary was born in Bangor, ME the beloved daughter of Helen (Thurlow) Geikie and James Geikie. Mary attended Bangor High School and in 1952 she married the late Albert Rand. Al and Mary owned the Colonial Candy Shop on Central Street in Bangor. Many locals will remember the homemade fudge, mints, Bangor Taffy and molasses kisses. Along with her husband Al, they were supporters and responsible for fundraising for the Levenson Center in Bangor. They ran the “Santa Cause” program for underprivileged children for many years bringing smiles, fun and presents to area children.
Mary was a member in the Junior League of Bangor, Patawa Club, Kiwanis Wives Club, served on the Auxiliary Board at EMMC, Quipus Club, and Sunshine Club for Children. She served on the Board of Directors of the Bangor YWCA and was the first recipient of the Mary E. Dyer Award given to the YWCA Volunteer of the Year in 1998.
Mary worked at Bangor Furniture for many years, and when they closed she went to Dunnett’s Furniture as a buyer and interior decorator.
She enjoyed skiing with her family, sailing, bowling with friends and loved to dance and listen to music. She was a great cook and always made holidays special. There was always a treat at “Nanny’s” house. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and crafting and making homemade gifts for family and friends with her dear friend Carolyn Eaton. Mary had a very close and loving group of friends in the “BLT Group” and she loved attending their monthly celebrations and lunches. Mary enjoyed a special friendship with George Hannington and they enjoyed traveling and dancing together.
Her husband, Albert Rand, and her grandson Alexander Rand predecease her. She is survived by her children Debbie (Rand) Gilmore and husband Tom of Rollinsford, NH; Brenda (Rand) Murphy and husband Bob of Brewer; Albert L. Rand, Jr. and wife Karen of Oxford, CT; Jonathan Rand and wife Cindy of Yarmouth, ME. She was a loving Grandmother to 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her brother, E. Duncan Geikie and his wife Kay-Sue of Falmouth, ME and her sisters Helen Meyer and Bonnie Fox and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sedgewood Commons for their compassion and care shown to Mary.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday, February 12, 2016 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, following the service. Interment will be in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor.
