KENDUSKEAG - Matthew (Matt) Elias Hikel, 25, died March 11, 2022 at his home in Kenduskeag.
Matt was born in Bangor Maine to Peter and Kimberly (Call) Hikel on March 12, 1996. He graduated from Central High School in 2015 and worked at the University of Maine for 5 years.
Matthew will be remembered for his gentle, sensitive spirit and kind soul. He had a big smile, a dry sense of humor and loved to make people laugh.
He obtained his private pilots license at the age of 18 and enjoyed all aviation related activities including building airplanes and remote control flying with his friends.
His love for history led him to enjoy metal detecting, relic hunting and learning how to properly preserve and restore cemetery stones. He often participated in the Kenduskeag Cemetery restoration efforts.
Matt also had an affinity for antique automobiles. He enjoyed tinkering in the garage, taking his ‘51 Chevy to classic car meets and driving around in his VW pickup.
You would often find him kayaking, snowmobiling, collecting sap, producing maple syrup and adventuring with his dog. Being outdoors brought him much peace and joy.
Matthew is survived by his parents; his sister, Kacy Hikel; his grandmother, Mary Call; his aunts and uncles: Michael and Tami Call, Marty and Sarah Hikel, James and Lori Hikel. His cousins: Aspyn Call, Justin and Kevin Hikel; and several other beloved extended family members and dear friends. Matthew will also be greatly missed by his dog Trixie and his cat Boo.
A celebration of Matthew's life will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 20, 2022 at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
