Matthew Louis Morin, 41, passed away unexpectedly, June 3, 2015 in Glenburn. Matt was born in Bangor, September 1, 1973, the son of Gregory Richard and Virginia Mae (Richards) Morin.
Matt was strongly influenced by the program of the Boy Scouts of America; which first instilled in him the concepts of Duty, Honor and Country. He credited the values that he learned in Scouting as the foundation of his adult life. He once stated that "Scouting made me who I am."
He was a Tiger, Cub and Webelos Scout in Pack 8 in Bangor, Maine, where he earned the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouting's highest achievement. Matt then joined Troop 8 and became a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting's National Honor Society. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with Palms. Matt also became a member of Explorer Post 315 of Dirigo Search and Rescue and was its president for many years; leading the youth members on actual search and rescue operations.
Matthew then joined the Maine Army National Guard was assigned to the 112th MedEvac company. He trained as a helicopter mechanic and crew chief and was the honor graduate of his class. Matt received a Certificate of Achievement from Headquarters, United States Army Aviation War fighting Center Fort Rucker, Alabama. He was qualified on the UH-1N Huey and the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters. Matt deployed with the 112th when they were sent to serve in Bosnia. He was recalled to the 112th in 2003 during the build up for the Second Gulf War. He was discharged from Fort Drum and eventually awarded a 100% combat related disability for PTSD from the Veterans Administration. He was re-classed later as medically retired from the United States Army. At the time of his death, he was Sgt. Matthew L. Morin United States Army (ret.) Tragically, Matthew lost his battle with PTSD.
Matt was extremely proud of both his Scouting achievements and his ten years of service to our country.
Matt graduated with his Associate’s Degree in Machine Tool Technology from Eastern Maine Technical College in 1998. He was selected as the Maine Technical College Systems Student of the Year and received the John H. Lapoint Jr. Leadership award. Matt was the graduation student speaker for the Class of 1998.
Matt was married to Wendy (Hanson) Morin, and helped to raise two beautiful stepsons, Andrew and Mitchell Kidder.
Matt had a lifelong passion for riding motorcycles from early in life. He started by riding on the back of his Dad's bike as a child and continued until the time of his death. Matt passed his passion for motorcycles on to his stepsons, Andrew and Mitchell.
Matt took a lot of pride in his weight-lifting ability, and was often found at Gold’s Gym. Matt was an avid canoeist. He and his racer partner, Gary Martin finished second consistently in numerous local canoe races, including a national race on the Dead River. Matt's other interests included archery, target shooting, boating, water skiing, snowmobiling, hiking and four wheeling. He was an outdoorsman.
Matt was a loving son, a loyal brother, and a devoted husband and father. He had a huge, giving heart, something that attracted everyone who knew him. He was full of life, and close with his family and step family.
Matt was predeceased by his beloved sister, Christine Marie (Morin) Wood. He is survived by his mother, Virginia (Richards) Morin; father and step-mother, Gregory and Jo-Ann Morin; his brother, Michael Morin; brother-in-law, C. Daniel Wood; niece, Amanda Leigh (Wood) Gallant; nephew, Ethan Morin; aunts and uncles, Christopher Morin, Nancy and Larry Lane, Robert and Sheila Mahon and Robert and Pam Richards; numerous cousins, as well as many special friends.
Family and friends are welcome to call 6-8 p.m., Monday, June 8, 2015 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St. Bangor, where a funeral service will be held for Matt, 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 9, 2015, with Rev.
