Melvin Braverman

August 7, 1927 — June 26, 2014

BANGOR - Melvin "Mel" Braverman passed away on June 26 in Bangor, Maine after 86 years of love and friendship from all who were privileged to know this “nifty” gentleman.
Mel was born and raised in Boston, where he graduated from Chelsea High School. He attended M.I.T before serving honorably in the Army Corps of Engineers in Korea. He was a shoe manufacturer, serving as President of Melori, Pappagallo, Old Maine Trotters, and Viner Brothers Shoe Corporations, among others. He was heavily involved in the communities in which he lived, taking on leadership roles for organizations such as the Collins Center for the Arts, the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, Maine Architectural Review Board, St. Joseph Hospital, Congregation Beth Israel Bangor, and his beloved Polish Spring Water Society, to name just a few. He was kind, strong, smart and loving, and will be profoundly missed by his many friends and family: his wife, Barbara Emple Braverman, two daughters, Betsy Alexander and Wendy Kaufman, son-in-law, Jeffrey Kaufman, three step-children, Sally Mitchell, Robert Emple, and Susan Lubner, and their spouses, Michael Mitchell, Denise Emple, and David Lubner, grandchildren, Stephanie and William Alexander, Robert, Alex, and Max Kaufman, Erik and Emily Rodstrom, Kevin Rodstrom, Lindsey and Jon Hutchins, Andrew, Sophie and Charlie Emple, Hannah and Julia Lubner, great-grandchild, Evelyn Barbara Rodstrom, and nieces and nephews, Michael Braverman, Lisa Predella, Hilary Rochelle, and Jane Hirschhorn. A supporter of the Maine Humane Society, he will also be missed by his beloved cats, Mimi and Blackie. An avid fan of UMO Women’s Basketball, he was a life-long Red Sox fan and patron of the arts, as were his parents, Benjamin and Celia Braverman, and late brothers, Lorry and Richard. He was our buddy, our confidante, our problem-solver. We will love and miss him always.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Sunday, June 29, 2014, at the Jewish Funeral Chapel, 118 Center St., Bangor. Interment will be in Beth Israel Cemetery, Bangor, following the service. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, following the interment. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a charity of choice, preferably one near and dear to Mel’s heart. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
