January 15,1961-September 24, 2021
Michael went home after an eight-year heroic battle with cancer. He was born in beautiful Island Falls, Maine. He spent his young life in the nearby town of Sherman enjoying the good food Ada cooked on the wood stove, surrounded by his large family, and set in the gorgeous views of Mount Katahdin. He told many rich and romantic stories of life on the family farm, that mountain, the roads between Patten and Silver Ridge. He often spoke of his childhood friends, their teenage adventures, their muscle cars, and 8-track tapes- each story ending in a nostalgic laugh. He greatly appreciated those friendships as they continued throughout his life. It was the hardiness of northern Maine which allowed him to endure his life’s tragedies. He lost his parents and three siblings during his life and yet he remained resilient and exceptionally kind. He wore that northern Maine hardiness until the very end.
Michael was humble in his request that we not mention-his basketball career at Katahdin High School or Boston University, or Husson, or certainly not his season in the European league or his coaching the YMCA travel team or the many referee gigs-so we won’t. We are proud of his athletic talents and notable honors. We are prouder still at his humility. What he would want to brag about is his two wonderful, loving, bright, generous children and the joy they brought him. They were where he found his pride and his blessings. What we know as his family; his children are simply evidence of the father he was.
Michael worked as a self-employed contractor and leaves behind an impeccable professional reputation. Work was never a chore. The friends and associations he had in the community are too many to list but he treasured them each. The very length of these relationships is testament to his character, his expertise, and his unwavering work ethic. He was one of the lucky ones who truly loved his occupation. Michael was a quiet supporter of Bangor’s marginalized community. He always tried to have the cash allowance to give to anyone in need. In his last months, he worried for their semi-dependence on his few dollars and smiling face. His kindness was innate. If you’re able, offer someone a hand up to honor him.
He also tended to various stray cats. Michael was their “person”. He fed and comforted so very many over the years. His cats knew his truck and would race to meet him. And he to them. His compassion was without discrimination (well, he wouldn’t cuddle a bat)- he would rescue bees, spiders, and even houseflies. He did it when he thought no one was watching, as his partner can attest.
Michael loved wholly as he was wholly loved.
If you didn’t have the chance to know Michael, he was witty, loving, generous, curious, weathered, brave, gentle, kind, stoic, beautiful, and a short 6’9”. He was an incredible father, brother, son, uncle, and partner. He loved Christmas, Canadian whiskey, Bob Dylan, canoeing, theatre, Seinfeld, puttering in the garage, family events, summer, politics, reading, ghost stories, and more recently, TikTok. He had a graceful gait, was silent when walking through the woods, could balance a bicycle on his chin, told the best ‘dad jokes’, loved hamburgers and ketchup, was strong enough to cry, was strikingly handsome, and was one of the most forgiving humans- ever. We liked him a lot.
But most of all, he loved us, his family- almost as much as he loved his cat, Buddy Boy ‘Bud’ Bouchard.
Like his father had said to him in his own last months, “I’m glad I knew you, Michael” -we, too, are blessed we knew him.
Michael is survived by his beloved cat, Bud, his partner and best friend of 20 years, Ann “Annie” Correia, his daughter, Lindsey Michelle Bouchard, his son, Logan Michael Bouchard, his dear nephews, Derek Kim Bouchard and Jamie Merle Bouchard, his sisters Theadora ‘Teddy’ Allen and Julie Glidden, and many beloved family, friends, and neighbors. Michael is predeceased by his brothers Kim Bouchard and Lindy Bouchard, his sister Micky ‘Pudgie’ Martin and his parents Helen Marilyn (McNally) Bouchard and Merle “Mike” Frederick Bouchard.
