BANGOR - Michael C. Day was born in Bangor, Maine on April 24, 1948 to Ronald and Tish Day. He was the first born and he had a five year head start on his three siblings. Mike spent most of his childhood in Little City, surrounded by lots of neighborhood friends and raising a little ruckus.
He passed away on August 7, 2023, after a shocking and horrifying cancer struck. He fought that cancer with all he had, but it wasn’t enough. We are stunned by this sudden loss.
He was an adventurous kid and that carried into his adulthood. He loved being in the woods, fishing, camping, cooking out, seeing new sights, and meeting new people. He and his wife, Kathy satisfied their wanderlust by traveling with their trailer, enjoying numerous vacations for 20 plus years. In early years they RV’ed with their kids, then their granddaughter, Christine. They saw a lot of the US and Eastern Canada that way. Their most exciting trip was to Montana in 2010, enjoying all the national parks along the way.
He had eclectic tastes in music, old movies, and food and drink. He loved the Wordle, for which he compared scores with his sons daily, crossword puzzles, jumbles, history and politics, and he followed C-Span and MSNBC faithfully.
He graduated from Bangor High School in 1966 and the University of Maine in 1970. He met Kathy in 1971, and they have been together since. They married in 1972, and through thick and thin, they stayed on the same path for 51 years. These two have been inseparable.
In early days, Mike worked at the Eddington Superette, the store his parents owned and operated. He and Kathy built their first home next to the store on Rt 9, and started raising their sons, Brian and Andrew there.
In 1978, Mike signed on with US Customs. The family moved to Vermont, then Montreal, Baileyville, and finally back to Bangor in 1988, where they bought a home on Pearl Street and stayed. He was well known in the neighborhood for his long walks with his little white shih tzu Stanley. Some thought they had matching white mustaches.
Mike was an honored retiree after 33 years with the US Customs and Border Protection Services. During part of his Federal service, he was the State of Maine President of the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU.) He was greatly respected by his work peers and supervisors. He took his work very seriously and won many awards for it. But he was also was known for a good prank now and then, like planting a fake dog doo on the floor when a highly trained and dignified drug sniffing dog was visiting the Customs office. He was quiet and had a dry wit, but if you paid attention, he was quietly hilarious. He never admitted anything and could keep a straight face when accused of hijinks.
Mike was a quiet sweet intelligent man, who could make anyone laugh. He is survived by his wife, Kathy (McCleary) Day, sons, Brian and Andrew, granddaughter Christine, and one great-grandson, Oliver. He is also survived by three siblings, brothers in law, nieces and nephews, cousins, many friends, old and new. Everyone who knew him loved him.
The family would like to thank the hands-on caregivers who were so kind and gentle with Mike at EMMC.
A Celebration of Mike’s Life will be held from 1-3 p.m., Sunday, August 20, 2023, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
