HAMPDEN - Michael J. Gilbert, 71, died February 24, 2022, at the Togus, VA Medical Center. He was born December 14, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Manford O. and Jane A. (Thebeau) Gilbert.
Michael served in the United States Army. He was an avid fan of the Cleveland sports teams. Michael met Rita in 1966, and they were married in 1970 and together, they raised two children.
In addition to his parents, Michael was predeceased by a brother, Gary Gilbert; and a sister, Nancy Gilbert. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Rita A. (Kearns) Gilbert of Hampden; daughter, Catherine Gilbert-Simpson and her husband, Michael, of Biddeford; son, Matthew Gilbert and his wife, Amie, of Surprise, Arizona; two grandchildren, Addison and Jordan Gilbert of Surprise, Arizona; sisters, Deborah Cronk of Carmel; and Patricia Mower of Bangor; brother and sister in-law, Thomas and Lisa Kearns of Lewiston; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
A Liturgy outside of Mass with military honors will be held 4 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2022, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, immediately following the service. Those who wish to remember Michael in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Maine Veterans' Home, 44 Hogan Rd., Bangor, ME 04401.
