Michael Jones

November 14, 1956 — November 1, 2022

New York, NY - Former Bangor native Michael Whitfield Jones passed away in late October 2022 in Brooklyn, New York City (NYC).

Mike was born in 1956 in Swindon England, near Greenham Common Air Force Base (AFB) where his father was stationed. When the family was re-posted to Dow AFB in 1960, Bangor life began. Mike attended some of the best schools in Bangor, New England and the nation. He graduated from Long Fellow School, Mary Snow School, Dow Lane Elementary, and Union Street Junior High School, before attending Phillips Exeter Academy, from where he spent a life-changing junior year abroad in France. He received a national merit scholarship to attend Harvard.

After graduation, Mike continued to pursue - largely in NYC - his life-long love of politics, entrepreneurship, culture and education. He had been central to the creation of Kids for Cohen for Congress in the 1970s, was avidly involved in the Institute for Politics while at Harvard, and had served on the advance team in Senator Edward Kennedy's 1980 bid for the Presidency. Mike worked in the executive training program of ATT, was a Wall Street trader for a spell, and gradually broadened his professional attention beyond finance. He dabbled in acting, and unlike many aspiring actors, regularly catered celebrities' private holiday dinners. He co-founded the Musical Feast of Harlem, one of the early cultural engagement enterprises to introduce Europeans to the diverse music, churches and food of Harlem. He taught and advocated health education for teens. With more recent digital training from NYU, he saw new social media as citizen fora to educate and critique, share and entertain, and empower the disadvantaged. Mike revelled in the art of NYC life for over four decades. Like so many from the small towns of America, he lived its bustle and melodies, challenges and thrills, to become an ultimate New Yorker.

Mike was predeceased by his brother, Daryl; and his father, Joseph of Bangor. He is survived by his mother, Aline Shaw Jones of Bangor; his sister Avril Michelle Jones of Bangor; his brother, Derek and sister-in-law, Colleen, of Montreal; his partner Chuck Prescott of NYC and Fort Lauderdale; his nieces and nephews, Nico, Kara, Logan and Bailey.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2022 at St. John's
Episcopal Church, 225 French Street, Bangor. A celebration of his NYC life will be held in Manhattan in the Spring of 2023.
