Bangor and Holden – Michael P. McDowell passed away on August 31, 2015 at a Bangor hospital. He was born February 20, 1938 in Calais, Maine, the son of Peter Franklin McDowell and Priscilla (Wheaton) McDowell.
Michael spent his boyhood in Princeton, Maine where he learned about sawmills, river driving, boating, carpentry and logging. In 1957, he graduated from Princeton High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force then returned to marry his high school sweetheart, Nadine McPike in 1960. They first lived in Limestone then located to their long term home of Holden, Maine. Michael was an expert carpenter and took great pride and detail in his work. He built his own home in Holden where he resided for over 40 years enjoying the wildlife of his backyard. A man of great curiosity, he enjoyed studying the history of his beloved Princeton and learning about the bigger world beyond. He was particularly interested in his Scottish genealogy and migration from New Brunswick.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Patricia Anne (McDowell) Hamilton, Claude McDowell, Cora McDowell and his sons Michael Scott, and Peter Eric McDowell. He is survived by his wife Nadine and his brother Joseph McDowell.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor with Chaplain Andrew Files of St. Joseph Hospital, Bangor, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share in memories and conversation at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., immediately following the service Wednesday. Interment will be at Harts Corner Cemetery, Holden later that afternoon. Those who wish to remember Mike in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Maine Parkinson’s Society, 359 Perry Road, Bangor, ME 04401.
