Calais, Caribou, and Bangor - Michael John Phelan, 73, died at a Bangor Hospital on October 19, 2022. He was born December 20, 1948, in Calais, the son of Leo Burton and Mavis (Lane) Phelan. At the age of 7, Michael moved to Caribou where he would spend the next 55 years until moving to Bangor.
He was a 1968 graduate of Caribou High School then received his diploma from Northern Maine Community College. Michael was a Master Electrician for 20 years. He also received a certificate for a Class A driver’s license from Northern Maine Community College.
He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, aboard the USS Repose, receiving a Bronze Star. Michael was a member of the American Legion.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Michael completed 26.2-mile marathon in Kansas State at the age of 63. He dedicated his life in caring for his mother for over 36 years.
In addition to his parents, Michael was predeceased by a brother, Robert “Bob” Phelan of FL, and a sister, Susanne DeGrasse of Orrington. He is survived by brother, Leo Phelan and his wife, Gloria, of Milford MA; sister, Patricia “Penny” Phelan Nugent and her husband, Charles of Baring Plantation; sister-in-law, Judy Phelan of FL; brother-in-law, Joseph DeGrasse of Orrington; many special nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 4, 2022 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 754 Ohio St., Bangor. The Rite of Committal will be held in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Caribou.
