Mildred E. Mcglinchey

December 20, 1923 — June 18, 2015

Mildred McGlinchey, 91, passed away June 18, 2015 after a brief illness. She was born December 20, 1923 in Hermon, daughter of Myron F. and Alice (Powers) Goodell.

Mildred was a graduate, also serving as Class President, of Hermon High School Class of 1941. Every year, she looked forward to attending her class reunions, to renew old friendships. During World War II, she sold War Bonds, and was the top seller in the Bangor area. In the 1940s, she was well known as a small plane pilot in and around the Old Town airport. Always a quick learner, she earned her certificate to solo with only four hours of instruction.

Mildred and her family resided in Connecticut during the 1950s and 60s. After returning to her beloved Maine in 1970, she became a psychiatric technician, a job she truly enjoyed, at EMMC, until her retirement. She was an active, lifelong member of the West Hampden Baptist Church, and served as its treasurer for many years. Her powerful voice was always a standout in the church choir.

Mildred’s many gifts were a joy to her family and friends. She was an accomplished pianist. She could identify any type of flora and fauna found in the state of Maine, and beyond. She could total up a set of numbers quicker than a Monro-Matic adding machine. Until her recent illness, she completed the BDN crossword on a daily basis. Friends and family looked forward to celebrating Christmas in her beautifully decorated home. And no story of Mildred’s life would be complete without mention of her devotion to her beloved Red Sox. She rarely missed a televised game, and enjoyed many visits to Fenway Park over the years.

For the last eight years, Mildred has enjoyed spending winters in Lake Wales, FL., where she attended Shady Hammock Baptist Church and made many close friends and acquaintances.

She was predeceased by her husband, Stewart L. McGlinchey; a brother, Myron “Bud” Goodell; a granddaughter, Erica Kenworthy; and a great-granddaughter, Haley McGlinchey.

Surviving are three sons, Leroy “Joe” McGlinchey of Ocala, FL., Ronald McGlinchey and his wife Kathleen of Lamoine, David McGlinchey and his wife Diana of Ripley; one daughter, Deborah Nelson and her husband Brian of Brooks; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Michael, Joe, Julie, Stewart and Chelsea; nine great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Corinne Goodell of Carmel; nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 6-8 p.m. Monday June 22, 2015 at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Av., Hampden. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at the West Hampden Baptist Church, 574 Western Ave. Interment will be in the Ruggles Cemetery, Carmel.
Gifts in her memory may be sent to the West Hampden Baptist Church, P.O. Box 398 Hampden, ME. 04444.
