Bangor - Miriam Marguerite (Miller) Robertson, our beloved Mum, passed away with her five children by her side on December 7, 2023, one day after her 93rd birthday. She was born on December 6, 1930, to James Hall Miller and Margaret Teresa Hanley Miller in Poona India, where her father served with the King's Own Scottish Borderers unit of the British Army.
Mum was a member of World War II’s “greatest generation”. Her parents attempted to evacuate her and her brother Alec to the US, however, they were ultimately evacuated to the English countryside and separated from their parents for 2 years during the war. At the end of the war, Mum’s family relocated to Kirkcaldy, Scotland where she met our Dad, George. In 1952 Dad immigrated to Canada. In 1953 Dad wrote to Mum and asked her to marry him and immigrate to Canada. They were married on November 27, 1954, in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada. Eventually, they moved to Vancouver, British Columbia where their first child was born. From Vancouver Mum and Dad moved to Everett, Washington where 4 more children were born and where they lived for 10 years. Our family moved many times as Dad, a mechanical engineer and true Scotsman followed his dream of providing the best life for his family moving from Everett, Washington to Tell City, Indiana, to New Castle, New Brunswick, Canada, and finally to Bangor, Maine in 1972. Mum said many times that Maine reminded them so much of Scotland. Mum truly loved Maine. One of Mum’s proudest moments was the day she became an American citizen with her daughter in 1984.
When her youngest was 10, Mum decided to re-enter the workforce, much to Dad’s chagrin as he was old school and he proudly stated that he “could support his family”. Mum started her career at Porteous in Bangor before the store opened and was one of the last employees to leave after they closed their doors, working there for 25 years until the age of 73.
After retirement, Mum volunteered at EMMC's Breast and Osteoporosis Center as well as St. Mary’s Catholic Church bringing communion to parishioners who were homebound and helping at funeral receptions.
Mum was a master knitter like no other, we were all amazed at the speed of her clicking needles and her ability to knit anything even without a pattern, while watching TV! Mum was an avid reader. She loved to go for walks and use her treadmill. Mum loved to travel. Her trip to Rome where she saw Saint John Paul II brought her joy beyond words. Mum’s greatest happiness and accomplishment was the loving family she created. Her pride in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was palpable, and she will be missed beyond measure.
Mum was predeceased by Dad, George Robertson, in 1999 and her brother Alec Miller in 2012. She is survived by her children, daughter Fiona Baker, and husband Maynard, son Drew Robertson and wife Jeannine, daughter Morag Robertson and partner Elizabeth Byard, son Colin Robertson and wife Denise, and daughter Moira Perry and husband Paul. Her Grandchildren, Christopher, Jennifer, Timothy and Keiramarie Robertson, Ian and Evan Baker, and Cameron and Maeve Perry. And her Great-Grandchildren, Khloe Baker, Olivia, James, Anthony, and Jonathan Robertson.
A most heartfelt thank you to the staff at Westgate Manor for their loving care of our Mum, we’re sure the sounds of Frank Sinatra are still echoing in the halls.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John’s Catholic Church, 217 York St. Bangor, followed by the Rite of Committal at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor.
