Myrick Cross

April 9, 1943 — February 10, 2024

Revered Doctor Myrick Tyler Cross, 80, died on Feb 10, 2024, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine. He was born on April 9, 1943, the son of Stephen and Hazel Cross.

Myrick is survived by two daughters, Katherine Noel Cross and Carrie Elizabeth Cross, and her husband David Choi, and two grandchildren Tristan Cross Choi and Acadia Cross Choi.

Myrick grew up on a dairy farm in Central Maine, in a town called Freedom.

He graduated from Wheaton College with a B.A. in Political Science in 1965. He received his Doctorate in Education Administration from Ball State University in Muncie Indiana. He served in the U.S. Air National Guard from 1968 to 1974. He has touched the lives of many throughout his career. He was the Principal of Greely High School, Cumberland, Maine, from 1971 to 1973. He served as the Director of Educational Services for Off-Reservation Native Americans in Aroostook County from 1974 to 1978.

In the early 1980s, Myrick was called to the ministry and attended General Theology Seminary in New York City. From 1981 to 1983 he lived in Chelsea, New York City, with his wife Amy Cross and two daughters. He received his Master of Divinity degree from the Seminary in 1983. From there, he returned to Maine to serve as Rector of Christ Church in Biddeford, Maine until 1986. He served as Associate Rector in the Church of the Redeemer, Baltimore, Maryland from 1986 to 1989; Rector of the Church of the Messiah, Woods Hole, Massachusetts from 1989 to 2001. He was the Rector of Saint Francis, Blue Hill, Maine, from 2001 to 2003.

From 2005 to 2010, he served as Canon Vicar at Christ Church Cathedral, Cincinnati, Ohio. This was his last full-time ministry before retirement. He continued his ministry as Priest-in-Charge at St. Patrick's, Brewer, Maine until his second retirement in 2022.

Myrick loved beauty in nature, in people, and in the things that people created. He was a poet, a visual artist, and a thespian. He was gifted at including and engaging with people and seeing God in them. He graciously invited them into the flow of the Spirit of God’s love. He nurtured communities wherever he went.
