Nancy Barrows

July 17, 1957 — April 23, 2024

Holden - Nancy R. Barrows, 66, passed away on April 23, 2024 after a long battle with cancer. She was born on July 17, 1957, in Portland, Maine, the daughter of Clarence G. and Lucille S. Roberts. She graduated from Deering High School in 1975 and graduated from Westbrook College (now University of New England) in 1978. She began her career at UNUM in Portland, Maine, working in the Mortgage and Investment Department. After moving to Bangor, Maine in 1981, she was employed by the Northern Light Health System for 40 years, retiring in December 2021. For many years, she was the Director of Administrative Support Services at Northern Light Acadia Hospital.
Nancy loved being physically active and outside with her family and friends. She felt fortunate to have a close knit group of high school friends. They traveled many places together and thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company. She and her husband, Gregory Barrows, also loved traveling and visited wonderful places outside of the United States including Switzerland, Costa Rica, Mexico and England; and toured most of the 50 states. She enjoyed over 30 summers on Green Lake with her daughter Kimberlee and her husband (and high school sweetheart). Nancy could be seen slalom skiing well into her sixties with family and closest friends. Nancy was also an avid expert downhill skier. She was born into a ski family and learned to ski at an early age. Nancy developed lifelong friendships at Sugarloaf. She also enjoyed spending time at her family’s place, always feeling at home when she was near the mountain.
Nancy was predeceased by her mother, Lucille in 1986 and her father, Clarence in 1990.
She is survived by her husband and best friend of 43 years, Gregory Barrows, of Holden, ME, their daughter Kimberlee L. Barrows, of Murrells Inlet, SC, her brother John Roberts and his wife, Jean Wilson of Falmouth, ME, her father-in-law, John T. Barrows, of Zephyrhills, FL, sister-in-law, Deborah D. Barrows, of Brunswick, ME, and sister and brother-in-law Diann B. Jordan and her husband Kenneth D. Jordan of Waltham, ME. She is also survived by 3 nephews Alec D. Jordan of Penobscot, ME, Ian K. Jordan and wife Abby of Waltham, ME, and Matthew B. Roberts and wife Jenny of Ickford, England, and nieces Alison E. Roberts of Yarmouth, Maine, Tina Leahy and her husband, Kevin of North Yarmouth, ME, Cassie Pruyn and her wife Lauren Gauthier, of Portland ME, and Morgan D. Jordan of Tremont, ME.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northern Light EMMC Cancer Care of Maine, c/o Northern Light EMMC Cancer Care of Maine Foundation, PO Box 931, Bangor, ME 04402-0931.
A public funeral service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, following the service.
A brief graveside service will be performed at Pine Grove Cemetery in Bangor following the reception.
