Commander Norman Albert Ross
Bangor
Commander Norman Albert Ross, US Navy (Retired), 87, died May 24, 2022, in Bangor. Norm was born to Floyd and Grace Ross of Washington, D.C.
Norm thrived as a youth in Washington, D.C. and was always proud to say he was saved there, at a Billy Graham Crusade, at the age of 16. He was very studious, with a great sense of humor. Both of these traits followed him throughout his life and earned him long time friendships which he cherished and nourished. He loved hosting, visiting, and corresponding with friends and family. He was ahead of his time, keeping a journal for over 40 years.
The consummate student, Norm earned many undergrad & graduate degrees, the first being at Cornell University through the NROTC program. At Cornell, Norm graduated college, was commissioned into the Navy, and was married all in one day. Carol Miller was his bride and they raised 4 children in the Navy life and later divorced. He went on to earn additional degrees from the US Naval Postgraduate School, University of Maryland, and University of Maine.
Norm had a distinguished career as a Navy pilot including flying P-2 and P-3 antisubmarine patrol aircraft. Other Navy assignments during his 20 years of service included teaching at the US Naval Academy, serving as an officer at Brunswick Naval Air Station, the US Naval War College, Naval Space Surveillance Systems, and other bases throughout the country.
Upon retirement, Norm moved to a farm in Monroe, Maine to continue his zeal for his work, volunteer service, and experimenting with facets of living off the land. Some of his work ventures included being a charter pilot out of Bangor, an instructor at Maine Maritime Academy, substitute teacher at local schools, and doing custom contract programming for many of the area water districts. On top of wrangling 2 wild mustangs and other critters on his farm, he was active in his local church choir, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, Volunteer Income Tax assistance, and leading bible studies in nursing homes. He was supportive of so many different ad-hoc projects, such as teaching Astronomy at a local home for youth, allowing Unity College students to use his Clinton property to build a log cabin from scratch for their college credits, and the list goes on and on. His energy for volunteerism never waned as demonstrated by his countless hours of service later in life as a lay member on the local Grievance Commission under the Board of Overseers of the Bar.
He met his beautiful wife, Donna Leonard Ross, as a continuing education student at the University of Maine at Orono. They made their home in the Bangor area and built a cabin retreat in Jonesboro. Together they combined their intellect and fun nature to create over 30 years of special moments with family, friends, and their community.
Norm is predeceased by his wife, Donna Ross less than a year ago. He is survived by sons Norman, wife Kelli, Daniel, wife Rose, Allan, and daughter Janet Ross McNulty, husband, Mike, stepchildren Linda and Robyn Leonard, 4 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.
The children wish to thank the staff at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor for the fine and dignified care he received in his final years.
Interment will be at a future date at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
