Hampden, Maine - Norman Stern, 92, passed away peacefully in his home overlooking the Penobscot River with his son by his side on August 20th, 2016, after a courageous battle with metastatic colon cancer. Norman was born July 31, 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of David and Sarah Stern.
He graduated high school from City College in Baltimore. Norman was an army veteran in the Signal Corps in WWII under General Patton, as a cryptographer transporting communications between the front lines and the general’s headquarters as the troops marched from France to Germany.
After the war, Norman completed his education – he got his bachelor’s degree at Western Maryland College and completed his masters at University of Maryland. He spent summers as a camp counselor in Maine and fell in love with the state.
Norman taught English professionally for about 15 years and then continued to teach in a variety of ways throughout his life. He’s been a guest speaker in libraries, colleges, and high schools.
Norman’s next career was working his way up from salesman to vice president of sales at Maryland Paperbox Company. As Norman’s friend and business associate wrote, “Norman's greatest accomplishment may have been the people he mentored, and developed meaningful friendships with. Norman always looked after the best interests of everyone that did business with him.”
Norman was married twice. With his first wife Doris, he had one son David and one step daughter Amy.
Norman and his second wife Marie were married October of 1978 and resided in Maryland and Maine. He spent the final 20 years of his life in his home in Hampden, Maine surrounded by endearing and wonderful friends and family.
Norman was a kind-hearted and caring soul, a father, and a grandfather. He developed a lot of friendships, and will greatly missed by his family and friends.
Norman will be remembered by all the lives he’s crossed for his many accomplishments and pursuits. He enjoyed spending time painting, traveling, and pursuing photography, and he loved the great outdoors. He always had a lot of high energy and had an extremely positive attitude. At 91, he threw his hands up to his close friend and said, “I need a plan for my life.”
Norman’s latest adventure began painting at age 75. He took ten art classes and hadn’t stopped painting since. Norman’s beautiful artwork covers portraits, seascapes, animals, and landscapes. His website is www.thesterngallery.com.
Norman was an avid traveler who didn’t hesitate to venture to different parts of the world, such as all over Europe, Scandinavia, Ecuador, Italy, Germany, Japan, Thailand, Egypt, Russia, Austria, and Africa.
Norman was an inspiration to all for his positive attitude, sense of humor, kindness, and generosity. One his last statements was, “It’s been a beautiful life.”
Norman is survived by his brother Harold Stern, his son David Stern, and step-daughter Amy Lippmann from his first marriage; Amy’s children Matan, Ido, and Roni; his step-daughters Jon Miller and Cindy Yoakum from his second marriage; two grandchildren Benjamin and Rachael; five step-grandchildren Jaimie, Jeffrey, Brian (wife Erika), Elizabeth, and Jennifer; three great-grandchildren, Maya, Ofri, and Elija.
He was predeceased by his mother and father and his wife, Marie.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at the Jewish Funeral Chapel, 118 Center Street, Bangor, Maine. Interment will be at Beth Israel Cemetery, Mount Hope Avenue, Bangor, Maine. Relatives and friends are invited to share in conversation and food, and an exhibit of his paintings at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor following the interment. A memorial visitation will be held 5:30 -7:30 pm Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday at Norman Stern’s home, 79 Summer Street, Hampden, Maine.
