Paul Druppel

VEAZIE - Paul Druppel, age 77, passed away June 28, 2019. Born April 23, 1942 in Linz, Austria to Lucia and Paul Druppel. Paul is pre-deceased by his wife Donna Marie Andreoli (Wood), mother Lucia (Pfeiffer) and step father Cornelius J Callahan.

Paul was a child of World War living in Linz, Austria with his mother. After the death of his father, baby brother Dietmar and his grandmother Karoline, Lucia met and married US soldier “Cal” Callahan at the end of the war. Arriving to the USA at the age of 9 years, Paul was welcomed into his new Irish family in Massachusetts. He attended schools in Malden and Stoneham, Massachusetts before joining the US Airforce 1960-1964. As an Airman Radio Mechanic during the Vietnam conflict, he served time there and Thailand. Returning to Massachusetts he attended Northeastern University to further his education for career opportunities as a civilian. He began his long career working for Delta Airlines, retiring in 1995.

Paul met and married Carol Butcher and their son Jason Cornelius was born in 1970 while living in the Boston area. They eventually moved to Atlanta, GA in 1972.

Returning to New England as a single man Paul met and married Donna Wood (Andreoli-deceased-8/13/2000 ) and her children Jim and Andrea in 1977. Son Jason and Jennifer along with Andrea and Troy (Goss) and Jim and Sharon gave him five grandchildren; Adeline and Aidan Druppel of Athens, GA, Brenden and Connor Goss of Cape Elizabeth, ME and Royce Wood of San Antonio, TX. All brought him years of great joy and pride.

Paul had a big personality and was a loyal, kindhearted, amusing and wonderful brother and friend. He is survived by his children and grandchildren, his former wife Carol and his Uncle Karl Pfeiffer of Dorset, VT. He leaves behind his siblings; Dorothy K DeSisto, Lucia G Casey, Shirley J Huber, Cornelius “Neal” J Callahan III and many nephews and a niece, great-nephews and nieces.

He was an easy man to love. His dry sense of humor, wry smile and twinkling eyes spoke the truth …. Not always with the best of diplomacy.

He had a gratifying career with Delta Airlines, beginning as a baggage handler and gaining promotions over the years ultimately becoming a station manager in England, India, Texas and finally settled in his beloved Bangor, Maine.

As a young boy Paul declared he wanted to live in Maine. At long last he managed to spend many years doing just that. All who knew him well knew of his devotion and love for the game of golf which he enthusiastically shared with many friends at the Penobscot Valley Country Club. He was deeply involved with another great interest with the University of Maine Hockey team, manning the penalty box at every game. How appropriate for this man. However, it was determined that running the clock was not a good job for him at all!

During his long friendship with Elena Perrello, he shared a very special love and bond with her family. He often stepped in as the honorary grandfather to Lauren, Casey and Chelsea Quaglia. His sweet face will be missed at their dinner table as they shared many good times, too many to count.

He enjoyed cooking, dining out and sharing special occasions, holidays and good times with family and friends. And, he always enjoyed a good joke and a card game. You never knew if what he was telling you was the whole story or embellished with a bit of what you wanted to hear. His mischievous and good-natured humor was endearing.

He fought the long hard battle against heart disease and was so grateful for all the love and support from family and friends during his final days.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at the Orono Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 72 Main St., Orono. Interment with military honors will be held 3:00 p.m. at the Riverside Cemetery, 170 Bennoch Rd., Orono. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Penobscot Valley Country Club, 366 Main St., Orono from 4:30-7:00 p.m. Condolences to the family may be expressed at Brookings-Smith.com
