LAKE WORTH, FLA. AND OLD TOWN - Pauline (Polly) J. Daigle, 94, died August 8, 2015 at Hospice of Palm
Beach County, Florida. She was born April 20, 1921 in Old Town, the seventh of ten children of Ralph and Myrtle (Bishop) Daigle.
She was a 1939 graduate of Old Town High School and moved to Washington D.C. where she attended Strayer's Business School. From June-December 1941, she worked as a clerk and stenographer for the Office of Indian Affairs in Washington D.C., transferring to the War Department Ordnance Division in 1942, and riding in the first M1A1 tank at Aberdeen Proving Ground. She worked for the Department of Agriculture from 1945-1948 then spent the next 25 years at the Pentagon with the Department of the Army in procurement, managing contracts for the Chaparral and Vulcan missile systems, among others. She received numerous awards during her 30 years of government service.
At age 52, she took early retirement and moved to Florida. Since that time, she has spent at least two months of every summer in Maine visiting friends and family and spending special time with best friends and Old Town High classmates, Frances Baillargeon and Margaret Comeau. A visit to her beloved cousin Rose Allain at Embden Pond each year was another highlight of her summers.
A devout Catholic her entire life, she helped anyone in need, including countless charities, and supported the work of missionaries around the world, including the Consolata Fathers. She was an avid tennis player most of her life, playing regularly until just a few years before her death. She was also a competitive Bocce Ball player every Fourth of July in Belfast, Maine, a regular at Tuesday night Bingo at Murray Hills - winning often, and an impossible-to-beat Shuffle Board player. Late afternoon walks along Lake Osborne with good friend Sophie Brandt were treasured.
A giving and loving spirit, full of energy and devoted to her family and friends, Polly had a deep and unwavering faith. She will be sadly missed by the many whose lives she touched. Special thanks and appreciation to Mary Holt, a friend and neighbor at Murray Hills, for her many kindnesses during Polly's illness.
Polly was predeceased by her five brothers, George, Herbert, Lawrence, Robert and Charles Daigle, and four sisters, Catherine (Kay) Ford, Florence (Flossie) Bradbury, Lillian Binette, and Marion (Mamie) King. She is survived by her cousin Claude Daigle, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.
A funeral mass will be held on Monday, September 21, 2015, at The Resurrection of the Lord, Holy Family Parish, 429 Main St, Old Town at 10:00 am followed by the Rite of Committal at the Daigle family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
