Peter Thomas Thibeau, 73, died unexpectedly but peacefully on February 15, 2022 with his family by his side. Peter was born on January 22, 1949, in Caribou, Maine, a son of Merton and Doris Thibeau. He and his eight siblings were raised on a potato farm in Fort Fairfield. Peter graduated from Fort Fairfield High School in 1967. He enlisted in the US Army in 1968 and served as finance clerk in Frankfort, Germany and Long Binh, Vietnam until 1970. After completing his service, he returned to Fort Fairfield and farmed with his father for 7 years. Peter attended the University of Maine, graduating in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with a concentration in computer science.
He married the love of his life, Ruth L. Lockhart, on June 8, 1980. They were married for 42 years. In addition to Ruth, he leaves behind: his daughter Abby Thibeau Lockhart; and his stepson Chad Bouchard and his partner Trish Anderton; his sisters Tammy Gallant and Claire Cousins; many nieces and nephews and their children. His cat Sammy and his beloved dog Maggie May are missing him.
Peter had a curious mind, a wry wit and a sharp intellect. He was a knowledgeable newshound and loved reading about politics and history. Peter was particularly fond of John LeCarre’s writing and read all 26 of his novels – many of them multiple times. Peter had a passion for language, wordplay and brain teasers, often puzzling over crosswords with Ruth and playing games such as chess and solitaire. He had astute and varied tastes in film and TV, an encyclopedic knowledge of Seinfeld’s 9-season run, and music interests ranging from classical to Bob Dylan and the Beatles. Peter was a strong supporter of women’s equality and reproductive rights and volunteered for Mabel Wadsworth Center.
He served in the Maine Army Guard from 1984 to 2006, during which he received a number of accolades, including an honor for outstanding administrator, and made treasured friends. He retired with the rank of Sargent.
Peter worked for 16 years for Carl Smith Foods and Verizon for 5 years, among other jobs. Most recently, he enjoyed working as clerk at Tom T Convenience on Broadway in Bangor for store owners Tom Thibeau, his nephew, and Tom’s wife Sally, until 2020. He felt fortunate to have Tom and Sally nearby as family members in the Bangor Area, as well as his niece, Lynn Thibeau, and members of the Lockhart family. At the store, he enjoyed the colorful and convivial interactions he had with customers and forged friendships with several regulars.
Per Peter’s request, there will be no service. Donations in Peter’s memory may be sent to Mabel Wadsworth Center, 700 Mt. Hope Ave, Suite 420, Bangor, Maine, 04401. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
