Philip Garland

November 3, 1931 — February 6, 2015

DEDHAM and SOUTH PASADENA, FLORIDA - Philip Adams Garland, 83, died peacefully at his home in Dedham. He was born November 3, 1931 in Bangor, son of Joseph D. and Carolyn (Adams) Garland.

Phil was educated in the Bangor public schools, Deerfield Academy and a 1954 graduate of Bowdoin College. Phil served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 as Company Commander First Lieutenant and was a recipient of the National Defense Medal. Phil was a well-known self-employed financial adviser in the greater Bangor area. On February 29, 1992 he married Pauline Howell and they enjoyed spending winters in South Pasadena, FL and summers at Green Lake. He was a member of St. Andrews Lodge #83 AF & AM of Bangor, Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Bangor, a member of the Eastern Star Lodge of Perfection, Palestine Council Princes of Jerusalem, Most Wise Master, Bangor Chapter of Rose Croix, Maine Consistory 32  and was coronated a 33  on September 27, 1988 and a honorary member of the Supreme Council of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the United States of America. Phil was also a member of Anah Shriners and the Royal Order of Jesters. Phil enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, skiing and he loved to tell jokes and had plenty of tricks up his sleeves.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Pauline (Violette) Garland of Dedham and Florida are his children: Jane and her husband, John Demaso of Hancock; Jonni-Anne Carlisle and her husband, Colin of Brewer, Joseph Garland of Dedham and James Garland of Bradley; two stepsons, Jayson Shubert and Mark Howell and his wife, Rebecca of Gardiner; grandchildren, Tiffany, Abby, Joshua, Michael, Garrett and Clayton and his sister, Joanne Heber of Dedham. He was predeceased by a grandson, Adam Carlisle and a sister, Virginia.

The family invites relatives and friends to share in conversation and refreshments 4-6 pm, Thursday, February 12, 2015 at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
