Philip Sherwood

Philip D. Sherwood, 88, died peacefully at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Bangor July 5, 2015. He was born August 10, 1926 in Bangor, and moved to Winterport in his teens. He graduated from John Bapst Memorial High School in 1944 and joined the Army, serving in Italy. He returned to Winterport, married B. Jean Theriault in 1949, and owned and operated the Winterport Oil Company until his retirement in 1991.

Phil was active in the Winterport community. He served on the boards of the Winterport Free Library Association and the Oak Hill Cemetery Association, and was a Life Member of the American Legion, Post 138, serving in many roles, including Post Commander.

Phil was predeceased by Jean, his wife of 51 years, on October 19, 2000. He is survived by his son, Peter J. Sherwood and his wife Rebecca, of Oakland; his daughter, Lauren S. Hallee and her husband Timothy, of Fairfield; grandson Matthew Sherwood of Westbrook; grandson Nathan Sherwood and his wife Jessica and great-grandson Samuel of Cape Neddick; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Sharon and Dennis Wilbur of Winterport; a cousin, Elizabeth Fenelon of Sheffield Lake, OH; and several nieces and nephews. Phil enjoyed the last 12 years of his life with his companion, Erma Wentworth of Orono. His family is forever grateful for Erma’s love and care. She is a blessing to us. We are also thankful for the professional and compassionate care Phil received at the Maine Veterans’ Home.

A graveside service will be held 1 PM, Monday, July 13, 2015, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Winterport. A service of Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.Brookings-Smith.com.
