AUBURN Priscilla Washburn passed away on February 4th, 2019. For eighty-seven years, Priscilla touched others with her warm-heartedness, compassion and wit.
Esther “Priscilla” was born on April 10, 1931 in Orrington, Maine, to dairy farmers Athelbert and Elizabeth Glidden Crook.
After graduating from Bangor High School Priscilla, a skillful seamstress, won awards for her handmade suits and apparel. She worked for Bangor Hydro Electric and Viking Sewing Center before starting her own tailoring business. During a brief stint as an Avon Lady in 1967, she met Walter Washburn and they spent the rest of their lives together. They loved to dance, socialize and stay active in the Orrington community. Priscilla was a lifetime member of the East Orrington Congregational Church, EOCC Ladies Aide and Millwee Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.
Known for her cackling laugh, Priscilla brightened every room. She had a knack for making others feel special. She is remembered for her sense of style, bright colors and fondness for fashion. She was lively, fun, and always up for new adventures and friendships. She loved planting flowers, baking pies, supporting her neighbors, and being creative with a needle and thread. She adored boating on the Penobscot and Frenchman Bays with her late husband Walter.
In addition to her parents and husband Walter, Priscilla was predeceased by her brother Jack Crook, his wife Josephine and brother-in-law Joseph Renaud.
Priscilla will be forever cherished by her family, including her daughters Debra Wedge and husband Mike of Hampden, Cindy Swift and husband Rick of Auburn, and April Herbold and husband Seth of Eliot; sister Betty Renaud of Brewer; grandchildren Dean Romprey and wife Jennifer of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Keith Romprey and wife Darcie of Hampden, and Henry Herbold and Natalie Herbold, both of Eliot; two great-grandsons, Gabriel and Derick; and several nieces and nephews.
Above all Priscilla loved people, and she will be dearly missed by her many friends and neighbors. Her family expresses gratitude to the devoted staff at the Ellen Leach Memorial Home and Schooner Estates Senior Living Community.
A memorial service will be held at East Orrington Congregation Church in Orrington, Maine, on Saturday, February 9th at 10am. Reception to follow. Donations may be made in Priscilla’s honor to the EOCC Music Fund, 38 Johnson Mill Road, Orrington, ME 04474. Condolences may be shared at www.brookingssmith.com.
