Ralph T. Carr
October 3, 1933 – May 27, 2022
HERMON – Ralph T. Carr, 88, died peacefully at his home on Friday, May 27.
Ralph had an immense impact on the town of Hermon, where the people elected him to municipal leadership positions 11 times – almost always by landslide. He served in the Maine House of Representatives during the 117th Legislature.
Born in Bangor to Harold J. and Clarissa L. Carr on October 3, 1933, Ralph graduated from Bangor High School and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in guidance from the University of Maine in 1961 and 1966, respectively.
As an educator, mentor, and friend, Ralph helped generations of people navigate adolescence and find pathways to fulfilling lives. He took his first teaching job at Hermon High School in 1961 and moved to that town in 1963 with his wife, Ann “Nancy”, and young sons, Joe and Mike. Over the course of nearly four decades in education at Hermon High School and Caravel Junior High, Ralph served as a teacher, principal, athletic director, and coach. Most Hermon alumni will remember him first as their guidance counselor, the job he held for a total of 29 years.
In addition to his professional responsibilities and elected service, Ralph was a lifetime member of the Hermon Volunteer Rescue Squad and Hermon Volunteer Fire Department. He coached in and managed youth baseball and basketball programs and served as Scoutmaster of Troop 25. This was all in addition to simply answering the call when needed. WLBZ television recognized his contributions with a Jefferson Award for community service in 1994.
Ralph was predeceased by his brother, Joseph, in 2015. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ann “Nancy”, of Hermon, and his two sons, Joseph, and his wife, Ellen, of Cumberland, R.I., and Michael, and his wife, Teri, of Veazie; five grandchildren, Brendan Carr of Los Angeles, Colleen Chapruet of Fairfield, Conn., Brian Carr of Swampscott, Mass., Ryan Carr of Scarborough, and Jordan Carr of Windham; three great grandchildren, Bradley Chapruet, Finn Chapruet, and Ruby Carr; and two nephews, Timothy Carr of Brunswick and Daniel Carr of Schenectady, N.Y.
Ralph’s family would like to thank Deborah Fitzgerald for her kindness and professionalism in providing care over the past many months.
