Ralph D. Smart, 98, died September 30, 2022, at Dexter Health Care in Dexter, Maine. He was born on May 7, 1924 in Bangor Maine, the son of George E. and Clara J. Smart.
Ralph graduated from Danforth High School in 1941. Following graduation, he apprenticed at Fay & Scott Machine Shop in Dexter, Maine. Afterwards he went to New Britain, Connecticut to work for Fafnir Bearing Company. He was drafted into the army air corps in February, 1942 and trained at Fort Devens in Lancaster, Massachusetts. He was stationed in Fresno, CA with the 550th Night Fighter Squadron.
After an honorable discharge from the service, Ralph helped his father construct cottages at Sebasco Harbor Resort. Afterwards he worked for Maine Central Railroad, then for Canadian Pacific Railroad until his retirement. After railroad retirement he worked for Varney’s and Van
Syckle’s in Bangor, driving courtesy vans. Ralph was active in retirement in the American Legion (Post 45
Danforth, Color Guard for Post 84 Orono). He was also active in the VFW Post 1761 Bangor, and was a member of the 40/8, 427 Maine. He worked diligently with Representative Baldacci towards the construction of the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor.
Ralph is survived by his son Michael Smart and his wife Diana of Veazie, son Anthony Smart and his wife Karen of Hampden, granddaughter Rebecca Rowe and her husband Tyler, great-granddaughter Emily Kennedy of Bangor, and grandson Ryan Smart and his partner Brennan Kenney of Carmel. Ralph is also survived by his brother Morris Smart and his family, his sister Marie Balint and her family, his sister Shirley Handler and her family, and the family of his brother William Smart. Ralph is predeceased by his wife Norma who passed away in June 1993. He is also predeceased by his brother William Smart who passed away in February 2017.
Relatives and friends may call from 5-7 PM, Thursday, October 13th, 2022 at Brookings-Smith Funeral Home, 133 Center Street, Bangor. Graveside services will be held the following day, at 12 PM, Friday, October 14th, 2022, at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Road, in their Committal Service Building.
