Ray Campbell Noddin

Cherryfield and Winterport - Ray Campbell Noddin, 92, passed away peacefully September 29, 2017 at Winterberry Heights in Bangor after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Cherryfield, ME, August 30, 1925, the son of Walter and Persis Noddin. Ray grew up in Cherryfield and attended Cherryfield Academy. After graduation from Cherryfield Academy, he attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, IL. Ray returned to Cherryfield where he worked in local industries including woodland maintenance and blueberries. In November 1943 Ray was drafted for service in World War II. He served in the Navy for over 2 years stateside and in the Asiatic Pacific Theater including Okinawa on the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Ticonderoga as a medical corpsman. After the war, he continued his education at the University of Maine in Orono and received a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering. Ray was hired by American Bosch in Springfield, MA. It was in nearby Chicopee Falls, where Ray met Harriet attending the First Baptist Church. They were married in June 1953. While working full time and raising a family, Ray continued his education and achieved an M.B.A. In 1970, he took the position of Technical Services Specialist at the University of Maine in Orono. That same year, Ray and Harriet, moved to Winterport with their four children and began a life in the local community. Ray served briefly on the Winterport Planning Board. He was involved for many years at Columbia Street Baptist Church (CSBC) in Bangor. Ray and Harriet, with several others and the support of CSBC, helped found the Winterport Baptist Church which was very dear to him. In 1987, Ray helped establish and run the UMO Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Ray will mostly be remembered for his love of God, family, gardening, tinkering in his workshop, and music - he has always loved the sea. He has been faithful in membership and service at Winterport Baptist Church, and will be greatly missed by his family, friends and neighbors. Ray was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Harriet.Surviving are, his children; Susan Severance and her husband, Ronald of Readfield; Virginia Knowles and her husband, Stephen of Beacon, NY; Ray Noddin II and his wife, Kari of Bangor; Douglas Noddin and his wife, Holly of Dedham; ten grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
