Raymond J. Harper, 78, passed away after a short illness, February 7, 2015 at Eastern Maine Medical Center. He was born in Hancock, October 18, 1936, the son of James F. Harper and Mildred B. Googins.
Ray graduated from Orono High School, class of 1980, and served in the US Army. He married Evelyn “Joni “ Sinclair on December 19, 1959, with whom he recently celebrated 55 years of marriage. Ray drove a truck for Drakes Bakery and Fox & Ginn before starting a long career at Bangor International Airport as a Ramp Supervisor, retiring in December of 1998. Prior to his retirement, Ray earned his CNA certification and volunteered many hours at Orono Commons. He particularly enjoyed a special relationship with Wilbur and Helen Parks for whom he cared for many years. After retiring, Ray continued working as a custodian at Orono High School where he enjoyed serving the faculty administration and especially his relationship with the wonderful students.
Ray had a special passion for his morning routine of feeding the birds, deer and squirrels, before heading to Pat’s to have his morning coffee and muffin with “the boys”. Ray also enjoyed visiting and watering the flowers at Riverside Cemetery, and a good round of golf.
Being the devoted husband, Ray took his marriage vows to heart, caring for his bride of 55 years. Ray enjoyed making others smile with a hug and a kind word, kiss and a piece of candy earning him the name “The Candy Man”. You will be missed, Ray.
In addition to his parents, Ray was predeceased by two brothers, Earl and Jim Harper; one sister, Marcia Blanchard and a special nephew, Alan Blanchard. He is survived hy his loving wife, Evelyn; daughter, Kim Giles and husband, Tom; son, Jim Harper and wife, Missy; and four special grandchildren, Michael, Connor, Corey and Taylor; as well as two special nephews Bob and Scott Sinclar; and a great niece, Debbie Quinney.
Family and friends are invited to call 5 – 8 pm, Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at the Orono Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 72 Main St. Orono. A memorial service celebrating Ray’s life will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, February 12, 2015, at the Orono United Methodist Church with Rev. Steven Smith officiating.
