Hermon- R. Joseph Libby, D.M.D., P.A. a devoted husband, cherished father, beloved brother, and esteemed dentist passed away peacefully on July 22, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, love, and dedication.
Born in Bangor, Maine on January 17, 1950, Joe was the son of Reginald A. Libby and Lois J. (McPherson) Libby. He graduated from John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor, Maine in 1968 and the University of Maine, Orono, in 1972 where he earned a B.S. degree in Zoology. After earning his undergraduate degree, Joe worked for Trott McPherson and obtained his real estate broker license. Joe then attended Tuft’s University School of Dental Medicine, graduating with his D.M.D. in 1979. After graduating, Joe opened his private practice on State Street, then years later relocated to Hammond Street in Bangor, Maine. In the early 2000s, Joe brought on an associate, who happened to also be one of his very best friends, Dr. John Caruso, D.M.D. Joe retired in 2014, after 35 years in private practice.
Joe was a man of integrity and kindness, known for his unwavering commitment to his family, profession, and community. As a dentist, he touched the lives of many with his skillful care, gentle demeanor, and genuine concern for his patients' well-being. His passion for dentistry was matched only by his dedication to serving others, earning him the respect and admiration of all who crossed his path. He retired with an extensive and respected patient following, as well as dedicated and valued employees, including his cherished office manager of 29 years, Sheila Meyer.
Beyond his professional achievements, Joe found joy in sharing moments of laughter, love, and togetherness with those family and friends he held most dear, especially his close friends Roscoe and Faye Witham. Joe’s unwavering love, guidance, and presence will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
Joe is survived by his daughter, Lindsay Libby Marcoux and significant other, Caleb, of Winslow; grandson, Oliver; brother, James Libby and his wife, Linda, of Levant; sister-in-law, Norma McInnis; many cherished cousins, nieces and nephews, Mike, Steven, Ryan, Alex, Jennifer, Nicole, Kristen, Kelsey, Amy, Michael, and Matt; and fifteen great-nieces and nephews.
Joe was predeceased by his spouse of 39 years, Mary Ann (McInnis) Libby; parents, Reginald and Lois Libby; and sister, Anne (Francini) Libby.
His family would like to thank the staff of Westgate Center for Rehabilitation and Alzheimer’s Care and St. Joseph’s Hospice who took exceptional care of him during his illness.
Friends may call from 5-7pm, Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St. Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at 11am, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John's Catholic Church, 217 York Street, Bangor, with a reception following at Brookings-Smith Family Reception Center, 163 Center St. Bangor. The funeral Mass will also be live-streamed on the parish website, stpaulbangor.me/watch-mass-live. Interment will be held at Mt. Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor.
