The Reverend Clifton G. Davis died May 1, 2020 at home with his wife Hella by his side, after a period of declining health. He was born on August 30, 1935 in Melrose, Massachusetts, the second son of Richard and Grace Davis. He attended schools in Melrose, Paul Smith’s College and Denver University, where he earned a BS in Hotel and Restaurant Management. Following graduation, he married his first wife, Janet Lee Titus and together they raised two sons. She passed away in 2011.
He then attended Bangor Theological Seminary where he obtained his Masters of Divinity degree. After graduation, Cliff was ordained at Melrose, Massachusetts in 1961. Cliff served two churches in New Hampshire until he accepted an offer from the Bangor Theological Seminary as their Assistant Librarian. During this time, he completed his Masters in Library Science degree at the University of Maine at Orono. Upon completion, he became the Librarian for the Moulton Library. He enjoyed a long and esteemed, 35-year career at the Seminary. During a sabbatical year, Cliff continued his education and earned a Master of Sacred Theology from Boston University. Upon retirement in 2000, he served as interim minister at South Parish Congregational Church in Augusta, Maine and at Adirondack Presbyterian Church in Saranac Lake, New York.
In 2012, he met Hella Spencer and they married in 2013. They enjoyed traveling, canoeing, long walks and time spent in their screened porch. He especially loved their search for the perfect lobster roll. Cliff and Hella appreciated and cherished their time spent together.
In additional to his parents and first wife, Cliff was predeceased by his brother, Richard Davis. He is survived by his devoted wife Hella; his loving sons, Gregory Davis and wife Karen, of Trenton; Glenn Davis and wife Mary, of Brewer; grandchildren Ben and Jared; and two great grandchildren Jack and Hunter. He is also survived by his pets, Benji and Cady. He will be sadly missed by his family, many friends, colleagues and neighbors.
Cliff believed that life is full of surprises. He was known for his kindness, sense of humor and generosity. He was a loving, faithful and compassionate husband, father and preacher. He had a deep and abiding spirituality that guided the many joys and challenges of life.
