Rhonda Libby, 69, of Levant and Bangor, Maine, peacefully passed away on August 24, 2023, after bravely living with cancer for many years.
Rhonda was, fittingly, born on Mother’s Day, May 9, 1954, in Bangor, to Sidney and Beryle Higgins. She spent her childhood in Levant Village, graduating from Hermon High School, Class of 1972. She then attended cosmetology school and began working as a hairdresser, later opening her own shop that she ran out of her home. Rhonda also spent several years in many different roles at Phillips-Strickland/Boyd Place, helping the aging community there thrive. She went on to earn her real estate license and transitioned to working at Dawson-Bradford where she was frequently a “top producer.”
Rhonda met her husband, Steven Libby, when they were both students at Hermon High. They later married in 1973. Over their nearly fifty years of marriage, Rhonda and Steve built many homes together, including the one where they raised their three children, Amanda, Justin, and Ashlee.
Rhonda felt at home playing cards (especially 83), antiquing, and relaxing with an ice-cold, very dry, gin martini. She enjoyed exploring new places, including Japan, San Francisco, Hawaii, New York City, and Quebec City, but her family’s camp, Old Stream, was particularly special to her. More than anything, she loved spending time with family and friends.
Rhonda was predeceased by her parents, Sidney and Beryle Higgins, and her daughter, Amanda Dandro. She is survived by her husband, Steven Libby; son, Justin Libby and his husband Max Ward; daughter, Ashlee Lynch and her husband Ryan; son-in-law, Travis Dandro; grandchildren, Isaac, Wyeth, Feleke, Isa, Miles, Reuben, and Thea; brother, Dennis Higgins and his wife Karen; sister, Gayle Libby and her husband Brian; sister-in-law, Kimberly Dunton; nieces and nephews, Bryan, Denys, Rachel, Angie, and Bradley; and aunts, Fran, Elvia, and Sally. Rhonda also leaves behind many cousins who held a very special place in her heart.
A memorial service in Rhonda’s honor will be held at 1pm, Saturday, September 2, 2023 at Brookings-Smith Funeral Home, 133 Center Street in Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor, following the service. Gifts in Rhonda’s memory may be made to Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancer at Dana Farber 450 Brookline Avenue
Boston, MA 02215.
