Richard Babb

August 29, 1931 — January 4, 2020

HERMON – Richard “Dick” Babb, Sr., 88, died unexpectedly at a Bangor hospital on January 4, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. He was born to Clifton and Irene (Chase) Babb in a Lewiston hospital on August 29, 1931.
Dick attended local schools and graduated from Brunswick High School in 1948. Prior to graduating high school, he became an Eagle Scout. Dick played sports and excelled in football and baseball. His love of sports continued throughout his life. He umpired college baseball, coached high school girls basketball, and was the Athletic Director at Hermon High School for many years.
After high school, Dick attended Bowdoin College and graduated with a teaching degree. He was commissioned in the Marine Corps as a second lieutenant. He became a qualified Naval Aviator by qualifying on the U.S.S. Monterey with 8 carrier landings. Dick was promoted to Captain prior to the end his military career.
His first marriage blessed him with his eldest son. Dick married the love of his life, Margaret Cornish in 1956. Together, he and Margaret raised 10 children. He worked the next many years in teaching, logging, and building, he built his last house at the age of 80. Dick worked extra-long days, not only to provide the essentials, but all of the luxuries that his family enjoyed, to include a swimming pool, tennis court, basketball court, farm animals, and pets. He provided each child with a car as their graduation present.
Dick and Margaret enjoyed 25 years as “snow birds”, splitting their time between Maine and Florida. In Florida he played golf daily with Margaret and other golf buddies. The last several years he enjoyed the company of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Dick was predeceased by his son, Jonathan. He is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret; son, Stephen Babb, his wife, Laurel, and their son, Stephen; son, Richard Babb and his wife, Kathie, and their daughter, Amanda; daughter, Susan Bellefleur, her husband, Stephen and their daughters, Michelle and Tara; daughter, Laurie Babb and her daughter, Meghan; daughter, Jennifer Davis her husband, Ralph, their sons, Theodore and Anthony; daughter, Stephanie Babb; son, Michael Babb, his wife, Lucy and their son, Jet; partner to deceased son, Jonathan, Karen Miller, and children, Jadine, Jonathan, Margaret, and Susan; daughter, Myra Babb and her children, Rachel and Dillon; daughter, Marcia Beams and her daughters, Victoria and Elizabeth; son, Matthew Babb and his wife, Julie and their children, Jessica, Stephanie, and Corey; sixteen great-grandchildren; extended family and friends.
A memorial service will be held, 4pm, Thursday January 9, 2020 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor, immediately followed by a memorial reception at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor.
