RICHARD C. CAIN
CORINTH
Richard Charles Cain passed away on August 22nd, 2022, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bangor, Maine. He was born March 25th, 1941, in Lynn, Massachusetts.
He graduated from Lynn English High School and went on to Gilford College in North Carolina where he majored in business administration. He worked in accounting for General Electric. Not content working with numbers all day, he went on to achieve his Masters in social work from the University of North Carolina. He worked with juveniles in detention centers in the Greensboro area. The structure and paperwork of professional life, however, was too confining for his restless nature and the choice was made to wander, explore, and experience life on his terms. An early muse captured his reasoning;
First I was a businessman
Making money
Then I was a social worker
Making love
But all I ever wanted
Was to make sense
So much for the gold
And the golden rules
Third time never fails
He proceeded to travel the country, never shying from physical labor, paying his own way in life and never looking for help from others. Eventually landing in Maine, he found his soul mate, Gail Bruns and together they set out to head west. He worked for the Forest Service and they saved enough to explore Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, always working enough to keep up their minimalist lifestyle. They traveled back east and eventually settled in Corinth, Maine.
Richard was a poet, a philosopher, an observer of life with an incredible talent of expression in the written word. He saw beauty in nature and carved it out in the finer pieces of wood brought back from the West Coast.
He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Edith Cain, his loving companion of 45 years, Gail Bruns, and their faithful dog and fellow traveler, Max.
He is survived by his former wife, Hope Page, his daughter, Dr. Carin Cain Earle, sisters; Carol Kitchenka and Nancy Baker Haney, a special brother-in-law and friend, Bud Haney and many nieces and nephews.
He and Gail are together again and his own words bring us comfort.
No debt or duty, left behind
Now reunited, their souls entwine
Beyond the ashes in light divine
No axe to grind, no grudge or spite
Will follow him into the light
