Richard Canfield

EDINBURG - Richard Jesse “Rick” Canfield Jr., 72, died at home after a long fight with cancer. He was born October 22, 1950, in Laconia, New Hampshire, the son of Richard J. Canfield Sr. and Louise Blanche (McGraw) Rowell.

Rick graduated from Kennett High School in Conway, New Hampshire, Class of 1968. Following graduation, he attended trade school in Berlin, New Hampshire, where he majored in automotives.

After a few years working in that career choice, he worked in and then later purchased his first NAPA store. This was the beginning of a long and rewarding career as a NAPA “jobber”. Over the years, Rick owned and operated several stores in the Carroll County area including Ossipee, Sanbornville, Fryeburg, Wolfeboro, Conway, and Kezar Falls, ME.

After retiring from his NAPA stores in 1987, he restored an old barn in Chocorua, New Hampshire on Route 16 and converted it into the Canfield General Store, now known as the New Hampshire Country Store.
Rick was a faithful member of First Congregational Church of Ossipee for 19 years. There, he served in different capacities over the years.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, Claire (Martin) Canfield, are his son, Christian L. Canfield and his wife, Tori, of Fryeburg, Maine; daughters, Kimberly L. Canfield, of Exeter, New Hampshire, and Melissa (Canfield) Brown and her husband, Jason, of Strafford, New Hampshire; his son, Gregory L. Canfield, of Tamworth; his first wife, Maryanne (Iverson) Canfield, of Chocorua, New Hampshire; eight grandchildren; one half-brother, Robert Rowell, of Pembroke, New Hampshire, his half-sister, Jamie Canfield, of Texas; and his half-brother, John Canfield, of Texas. In addition to his parents, Rick was predeceased by his brother, Michael Rowell, of North Carolina and a half-sister, Karen Canfield, of Texas.

Relatives and friends are welcome to attend a Celebration of Rick’s Life at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 30, 2023, at First Congregational Church of Ossipee, 50 NH-16B, Center Ossipee, New Hampshire. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the Atrium of the church immediately following the service. Those who wish to honor the memory of Rick may make gifts to First Congregational Church of Ossipee. Flowers may be sent to the Church the morning of the service between 11:00 and 12:30.
