BANGOR
On Thursday, April 6, 2023, Richard “Dick” Hammons, age 82, passed peacefully in Bangor, Maine. Dick was born on July 26, 1940, in Bangor, Maine the son of, Herbert and Louise Hammons.
In addition to his parents, Dick was predeceased by his brother, Herbert Hammons Jr.
Dick is lovingly remembered by his wife, Sue Gould Hammons; daughter, Kelsey Duncan and her husband, Nick; his stepchildren, Robert Gould and his wife, Kimberly, Heather Gould Chapman and her husband, Richard; grandchildren, Kaden and Ella Duncan, Rebecca Willette and her husband Jared, Haley Gould, Alyssa Elliott, Molly, and Ally Chapman; brother, John Hammons. His nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends will also fondly remember him.
Dick graduated from Bangor High School in 1958, then joined the U.S. Army and lived his life as a true patriot. In his early twenties, he moved to California and attended Cal State Long Beach where he received a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering. Dick enjoyed a successful career in the management of the Thermal Protection Soft Goods Department for the Space Shuttle Launch Operations Program. His career involved working for Rockwell International at Downey, Palmdale, Vandenberg Air Force Base, and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
After retirement in 1996, Dick went back to Maine where he reunited with and married Sue, his high school sweetheart. They took many trips across the country in their travel trailer, visiting family and friends along the way. They enjoyed wintering in his Florida home where Dick fulfilled his dream of owning an ocean trawler and traveling the intercoastal waterways, the Everglades, and Key West. They enjoyed summers in Maine at the Springy Pond camp with family and friends. Dick was very kind and generous; his comedic style was sure to get a laugh. He will truly be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
