Richard Paul Hawkins, 87, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2019, at his home. He was born January 18, 1932, in Houlton the son of Frank and Ethel (Bates) Hawkins.
Dick graduated from Houlton High School in the Class of 1950. He was the Class President and lettered in 6 sports. Dick graduated from Ricker College with a Degree in Accounting in the Class of 1955. He was Exalted Ruler of BPOE #835 and the treasurer of Houlton Regional Development Assoc. and was chairman of several financial drives. Dick was very involved in the community when he lived in the county as President of the Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce, President of the Presque Isle Country Club, President of the Spudland Open Golf Tournament, National Ski Patrol at Mars Hill, and was Treasurer of the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club. In 1974 he moved to Bangor to work for the Dead River Company and worked in several positions with the company. Once again Dick got involved with his community and was the President of the Greater Bangor Open Golf Tournament, President of the Brewer Economic Development Corp, a director of the Bangor Chamber of Commerce, Board of Governors of the Penobscot Valley Country Club, and was a Director of Eastern Maine Development Assoc.. He also was involved within his profession and was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Maine Oil Dealers Assoc. as well as Director Emeritus of Maine Oil Dealers Assoc. One of Dick’s proudest achievements, in addition to his family, was the purchase of Hamel Fuels in 1981. He was confident that with personalized customer service and having a passion for knowing all of his customers was the key to success. He successfully operated Hamel Fuels as the President and CEO for 20 years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years Dolores (Gray) Hawkins; a son, Rodney Hawkins and wife Monica; a daughter, Candace Hawkins; a son-in-law, Scott Kimball; grandchildren, Ashley, Sasha, and Chandra; siblings, Dorothy Lawton and Ted Hawkins; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by siblings; Marion Fitzpatrick, Earl Hawkins, Bob Hawkins, and Betty Russell.
Friends may gather with the family from 5-7 PM, Sunday, Jan. 27, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 S. Main Street, Brewer, where a Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 AM, Monday, Jan. 28, with Pastor Dan Russell, officiating.
