ORONO- Richard James McCubrey, 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on February 4, 2014, in the home he designed and built with his wife 51 years ago. He was born December 30, 1922 in Portland to Charlotte and Robert McCubrey.
Dick enlisted in the Navy just before his graduation from S. Portland High School, in 1940. He served through World War II and the Korean Conflict. He circled the world three times before he was 21. In 1943, while home on a 10 day leave he married his childhood sweetheart Thelma Hughes. They celebrated 69 years of marriage before Thelma passed away on March 17, 2013. Dick belonged to many organizations including the Veazie Salmon Club, where he was the “master biscuit” maker and cribbage player. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #38, A.F.&A.M., Gorham and Anah Shrine, Bangor. Dick retired after 28 years as superintendent of the University of Maine heating plant. Dick spent many happy hours in his workshop creating and building his boats, canoes and handcrafted snowshoes, with his snowshoes in every state in the U.S. His true passion in later years was carving water fowl and song birds, and teaching many others this art. Summers and spare time was spent at the camp he and Thelma built on Pleasant River Lake. He loved to fish, hunt, kayak, and pick wild blueberries at camp. He especially enjoyed his hunting and fishing trips with his buddies. Dick was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend.
Surviving are son Richard C. McCubrey and his wife Raylene of Grottoes, VA; daughters, Gail DeSantis and her husband John of Standish, and Heather Grubb and her husband Carl of Gray; 5 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson. He is predeceased by his grandsons, George McCubrey and Eric DeSantis, and his wife Thelma McCubrey.
