Bangor-Richard A.'Speedy' Modery, 78, passed away June 5, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer, that advanced rapidly near the end. He was born in Augusta, April 23, 1939, son of Clarence L. Modery and Marguerite Modery Thomas. Richard was drafted into the Army in October of 1962 and was honorably discharged in 1964. Upon discharge, he went to work for the Bangor Daily News, a job he held for nearly 50 years, where he also served as union president. Richard enjoyed the outdoors, hunting in his younger years and fishing for many years, particularly his yearly fishing trips with his brother, John. During the winter he would gather with relatives and friends at Pushaw Lake to ice fish. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Modery of Bangor; two sons, Richard Modery and his wife, Jennifer of Orrington, Eric Modery; grandchildren, Amber Snyder and Andrew Modery; brothers, John Modery, Clarence Modery, both of Hermon and Melvin Thomas of Hudson; a sister, Linda Hayes of Washington; nieces and nephews; his beloved canine buddy, Robin, and feline pals, Christmas and Linda.
