Richard Sterns

Richard was born in Skowhegan, Maine October 18, 1933, the son of Frederick James Sterns and Sarah Hoos Sterns. For most of his life he was an active member of his home community. He attended the Skowhegan public schools (SAHS Class of '51) and was a letterman in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was also an accomplished pianist. He graduated from Yale University where he was a varsity member of the football and fencing teams. He then graduated from New York University with a Masters in Retailing. He was an executive with Bloomingdale’s in New York until he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served at Fort Lawton in Seattle, Washington where he met and married his first wife Susan Asia. Upon completing Army Service, he returned to Skowhegan to become an executive for Sterns Department Store and later the Knot Hole Ski Shop. While an executive with Sterns he attended the University of Maine in Portland and received his Law degree. Dick was a partner at Eames and Sterns Law Firm and then later practiced at his home until his retirement. He was a distinguished member of the local Rotary, an avid gardener, a voracious reader, and a loyal Red Sox and Patriots fan. He was an honorary coach of the Winslow Black Raiders for the past 3 years with his grandson Jesse. Dick loved and appreciated good food and looked forward to Sunday night dinners with Florence and their extended family at their home in Skowhegan. He was predeceased by his parents and wife Florence. He is survived by his brother Dr. Harvey Sterns and wife Ronni of Akron, Ohio, son Michael Sterns D.V.M. and wife Marti of Redwood City, California, daughter Pamela Gartner and husband Ricardo of Atlanta, Georgia and son Daniel Sterns and wife Donya of Charlotte, North Carolina, stepdaughters Susan Blaisdell, Karen LaCasse and Nancy Baxter, 10 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren and 7 step great grandchildren as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will all miss him. The family would like to acknowledge the care that he received at the Redington Home in Skowhegan and the Maine Veteran’s Home in Bangor. A Graveside service will be held 5:00pm Sunday June 29, 2014 at the Beth Israel Cemetery, Severence Road, Bangor. Following the service the family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Seasons Grille 427 Main Street, Bangor.
