Orono – Robert Everett Emerson passed away on March 2, 2015, at the age of 92, after a long and fruitful life. He was born November 13, 1922, in E. Lincoln, the second son of J. Harold and Nan W. Emerson.
He was educated in the Bangor Public Schools, graduating first from Bangor High School in 1940 and then from Higgins Classical Institute in 1941. Subsequently, he entered the University of Maine and was a standout athlete playing football and track, and he held several records in pole vaulting. His college career was interrupted by World War II and in 1943, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and served as a B-24 pilot in the Pacific. After his return from war, he served in the Air Force Reserve, until he retired in 1968, as a Major. Following his war service, he returned in 1946, to the University of Maine. He continued to engage in campus affairs as a member of the Sophomore Owls and Senior Skulls honor societies and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He also returned to playing football and track and was honored as an All-Maine End in football.
He married Eleanor True June 14, 1947. It was a marriage which would last more than 63 years until her death in 2010.
He graduated U of M in 1948 with a degree in chemistry, and he entered the pulp and paper industry at Penobscot Chemical Fiber/Diamond International in Great Works. He retired in 1983 as the Kraft Mill Superintendent.
He was very active in community affairs. Bob coached football at Orono High School for seven years starting in 1948. He also served as a church school teacher and superintendent, at Orono Methodist Church. He was elected to the Orono Town Council, was active in Girl Scouts and Jr. Chamber of Commerce. Bob and Eleanor shared a love of golf and were long time members of the PVCC , where they shared many fun filled hours with friends. He was an accomplished woodworker and built an airplane, several boats, furniture and a camp. In later years he was a volunteer driver for the Orono Health Association, a service he was able to avail himself of in recent months.
He is survived by a brother, Merwin Emerson and his wife Zelda, of Salt Lake City, UT; a sister, Althea McClure of Tucson, AZ; 3 children, Sandra Emerson King and her husband, Dennis of Freeport, Cynthia Emerson of Bangor, and Glenn Emerson and Sandi Mead of Hudson, NH; 2 grand children, Aaron King and his wife, Samantha of Morristown, NJ, Kristen King Pierce and her husband Andrew of Brunswick; great grandchildren, Cody King, Eli King, Grady Pierce and Holly Pierce; and several nieces and nephews.
