Robert Vincent Harris, 78, of Bangor, died peacefully at his home in Bangor August 31, 2022. He was born on February 28, 1944 to Elaine (Armstrong) Harris and Roy V. Harris, in Old Town.
Robert graduated Old Town High School in 1962. After high school he moved to Lewiston where he attended Bernard's School of Hair Fashion. His dream was to work as a makeup artist in the movie industry. These plans were interrupted when he enlisted in the military April 1965. He served in the Army overseas, in France and Germany, for 3 years. He later moved back to Maine where he worked as a machine mechanic at Osram Sylvania in Bangor.
Robert is survived by his wife Anne Reigstad of Moss, Norway, his stepdaughter, Monica Reigstad and her husband, Terje Bontveit of Oslo, Norway and their sons; Rufus, Nico and Levi, and his sister, Heather Upham Wood, his nephew, Eric Harris of Beverly, MA, his niece, Danielle Rauscher of Newport, ME, and four grand nephews, Jake of Carmel, ME, Josh of Newport, ME, and Niko and Oskar of Beverly, MA.
Robert was a creative soul - always looking for ways to express his love for craft and art. One day he came home from work and told his wife they needed a hobby. That was the start of years of creativity, using glass as the medium for making jewelry, crafts and art. It started with stained glass, then fused glass and glass jewelry.
When Osram Sylvania prepared to move their production to Mexico, Robert took an early retirement in 2003, and could fully concentrate on his true passion of making art. Together with his wife he started Ymir Glass Design, a glass studio at their home in Bangor. For many years they were members of United Maine Craftsmen, and participated at craft shows all over Maine, but Robert was always looking to expand into new art forms. In later years he enjoyed making steampunk art - an art genre inspired by steam engines used in a future world. Now his work can be found at Maine Jewelry & Art in Bangor, and on his website ymirglassdesign.com/steampunk.html.
