Robert Kelly

January 16, 1948 — January 25, 2023

Robert J. Kelly, 75, passed away January 25, 2023 after a brave battle with cancer. He was born January 16, 1948 in Bangor, the son of Robert and Mary Emeline (Gallant) Kelly. He graduated from John Bapst High School Class of 1966 and received his MBA from Husson College (now University). He worked many years for the Darling’s Corporation and the Darling family, then for Dead River Co. as Sr. Manager of audit. Most recently he was employed as General Manager of Penobscot Bay Terminals until his retirement in April, 2022.

Bob was active in his community having served on the Veazie Town Council for several terms and was a member of the Bangor Lions Club for many years. Additionally, he was an active member of St. Paul the Apostle Parish. He had a great love for sports especially golf and was recently inducted into the John Bapst High School Football Hall of Fame.

In 1967 he married his high school sweetheart, Fran Hurley, and they celebrated 55 years together this past November. They were blessed with two daughters, Wendy and Julie. Bob is survived by his wife, Fran, their daughters: Wendy (Kelly) Slauenwhite, her husband, Mark and children, James and Nicholas of Saco, Maine; Julie Kelly-Cote and her husband, Shane and children, Anthony and Andrew of Hampden, Maine. He also leaves behind his brother Bill Kelly and his wife, Peg of Bangor and his sister Colene Turner and her husband, Jay of Hermon. Additionally, a special uncle, Marty Kelly and his wife, Pat survive him. He also will be missed by sister-in-laws, Helen Carpenter of Yarmouth, Pam Hurley Moser and her husband, David of Portland and brother-in-law, Mike Hurley and his wife, Kelli of Bangor. He also leaves behind special cousins, nieces, and nephew. Family, as well as friends, were important to Bob and Fran and several close friends, as well as his high school buddies have stayed in touch with him over these many years. He was predeceased by both his parents and a special aunt, Mary Kelly of Bangor in 2016.

Visiting hours will be from 5-7 PM, Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, February 3, 2023 at St. Paul the Apostle, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York Street, Bangor. Those wishing to attend the Mass remotely may do so by visiting stpaulbangor.me/watch-mass-live.
