CARMEL – Robert R. Sibley, 72, passed away July 11, 2024, after a hard-fought battle with a long-term illness. He was born June 24, 1952, in Bangor, the son of Robert O. and Ruby (Scott) Sibley.
Robert was a lifetime Carmel resident, graduating from Hermon High School. Following graduation, he served his country in the United States Marine Corps, where he was stationed in Quantico, Virginia, on HMX1, serving on the Presidential Honor Guard. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal and the Presidential Service Badge, in Washington. After serving as a Marine, he served in the Maine Air National Guard.
Following his service, he worked for Northern Pipe and Supply and later as a machinist at General Electric for 20 years. In his retirement, he served his local community in several capacities in the Etna/Carmel American Legion Post #107. In his spare time, Robert was an avid reader, frequenting the Carmel Library. He also enjoyed woodworking.
Surviving Robert, are his siblings, Susan Garland and her husband, Robert, David Sprague and his wife, Rhonda, Scott Sprague and his wife, Paula, and Patrick Sprague, and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Dorothy Sibley, and Ruby and David Sprague; beloved son, Reed Owen Sibley; sister, Lynn (Sprague) Tweedie; brother, Michael Lee, and nephew, John Garland.
A Celebration of Robert’s Life will be held from 12-2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 18, 2024, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor. Interment will be private at a later date. The family would like to extend their heart-felt gratitude to the Carmel librarians, Evy and Lee, who faithfully fueled his passion for reading and thank you to the Carmel community who supported him throughout his illness.
