Robert Spearing

February 4, 1931 — February 4, 2021

BANGOR- Robert “Bob” Francis Spearing, 90, husband of the late Margaret (Leighton) Spearing, died February 4, 2021, in Bangor. He was born February 4, 1931, in Bangor, the son of Ralph and Ruth (Fielding) Spearing.
Following graduation from Bangor High School in 1949, Bob joined the United States Air Force as part of the first Air Police Class in USAF history and was assigned to Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota as a member of the 28th Air Police Squadron. Soon after, he married his high school sweetheart, Margaret, with whom he shared 50 years of marriage and four children. His time on Active Duty included a tour to RAF Manston, England during the Korean War. After leaving Active Duty, Bob served the Maine Air National Guard as a Security Forces Technician before joining the United States Postal Service. Bob retired after 33 dedicated years of service to the USPS to care for his wife, Margaret, as her health declined.
Bob was blessed to find love again, after Margaret’s passing, in his companion of 22 years, Kathleen Blair. Kathleen and her family shared many treasured memories with Bob. He was a very loving Grandpa to Kathleen’s daughter’s children, Kyle, Daniel and Sydney Orndorff.
He enjoyed visiting Walt Disney World and Acadia National Park, especially the Asticou Azalea Garden in Northeast Harbor. When age and health kept him from going to Disney, he lived through the visits and videos of others, lighting up when he talked about Disney World. He was an avid Red Sox, Patriots and golf fan. The only subject that got him more wound up than sports was a lively political conversation.
Surviving, in addition to Kathleen and her family, are two sisters, Marilyn Chance of Iowa and Donna Schneider of Florida; sons, Richard Spearing and his wife Betty, of Winterport, Mark Spearing and his wife Merlin, of Bangor; daughters, Wendy Kavin and Lisa Spearing of Bangor; grandchildren, Rebecca Cousins and her husband, David of Bangor, Allison Kavin of California, David Kavin and his wife Nicole of Virginia; and a great-granddaughter, Adelynn Kavin; and many nieces and nephews. Robert was predeceased by five brothers, Kenneth, Walter, Harry, Roland, and Paul; and two sisters, Dorothy and Alice.
A memorial service and military honors for family and close friends will be held 11 am, Thursday, February 11, 2021 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Those wishing to view a live tribute or leave condolences, may do so by visiting BrookingsSmith.com.
