Rodney Mann

August 6, 1946 — December 31, 2015

ORRINGTON – Rodney P. Mann passed away on December 31, 2015. Rodney was born August 6, 1946, in Bangor, the son of Ivie and Sadie Mann. Rodney was a 1964 graduate of Brewer High school and attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas. It was while in Texas where he met and married his wife of 46 years Linda and later returned to Maine to raise their family.
He was a lifelong resident of Orrington where he served for many years as a town selectman and the junior high school girls basketball coach. Rodney worked for Coca-Cola Bottling Company for over 25 years. In his retirement he earned his master gardener designation and enjoyed traveling cross country taking on such adventures as the Moki Dugway.
Rodney loved being outdoors. His favorite times were spent in his garden, golfing at Pine Hill, or sitting on his porch reading. A lifelong “flop” Sox and Giants fan. He was also an avid stamp and book collector.
Rodney was a founding member of the Greater Orrington Open, helping to design each course in the 17 years of the tournament. He was also a proud member of the M.J.’s Caps Connections team helping to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
He had a strong work ethic in anything he did whether it was a part time job or community service. To that end he used his gardening talents and donated his time in recent years to maintain and cultivate the Children’s Garden located on the Penobscot River in Brewer.
Rodney’s true love was any time he spent with his family often telling stories of their crazy traditions and travels to others. He was a proud husband, father, grandfather and loyal friend. A true character he was funny, quick witted, and enjoyed a good prank. Always caring about his family and friends enjoying life and their time together he was often heard reminding them to smile.
He is survived by his wife, Linda of Orrington, his daughter Sammantha Kramer and her husband, Matthew of Falmouth; his daughter Christiana Nason and her husband, John of North Yarmouth; two granddaughters, Sadie Kramer and Emma Nason; as well as close family friend Robert Sekera of Eddington. He was predeceased by his parents, Ivie and Sadie Mann, a brother, Leonard Mann, and a son, Lawrence Mann.
Relatives and friends are invited to call 2 – 4pm, Sunday, January 3, 2016 at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main Street, Brewer. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Dean Hill Cemetery in Orrington.
